Trails were well maintained and peaceful. Was disappointed there were no waterfalls due to the drought. Some trails were 50-60% steps. The maps did show some step areas, but does not convey the amount of them, nor did the staff mention this. Some areas had...More

This is a great place to take a walk/hike in the fall. The views are great. The visitor center has a lot of information and my grandkids loved looking at everything. There is a restaurant and gift shop on the grounds.

If you don't mind a lot of stairs this is a terrific hiking park. Several canyons and waterfalls. Beautiful and clean.

The park was very nice to visit. I took the tram ride in the afternoon when I arrived. Not sure that was worth it, though the tour guide was excellent and it wasn't that expensive. I thought we would see more of the park. Went...More

I have lived in chicago for 60+ years and never made it here - what a tragedy. Great place - definitely worth a visit. Stay at the lodge for a vintage experience.

My friend and I walked one of the trails yesterday. A beautiful fall day. Starved Rock has many trails so depending on the amount of time, you can hike for hours. The path we hiked had great wooden railings. There are many stairs sprinkled along...More

There's always something to enjoy at Starved Rock State Park, beginning in the coldest part of winter when the eagles return. The best time to come then is during the annual Bald Eagle Festival at the end of January -- if the river has frozen....More

This is a beautiful stop to do some short hiking. We went during the drought and even without the waterfalls it was breathtaking. Trails are well marked and trodden. Lots of stairs and boardwalks along with dirt trails. Staff was helpful at the visitor center....More

I would say no. I have never heard of anyone dog sledding in this area. They cross country ski at Mathieson so maybe a call to the Park Ranger.

I'd also recommend Matthiesen for the size. You will be able to take a shorter walk and still see nice canyons. You probably won't be able to do much with a stroller at any of the parks, so I'd just enjoy the smaller place.
