I've only been in the Japan House once, when they were exhibiting the work of an art class. However, the grounds are open to casual visitors pretty much any time. The house is adjacent to a set of excavated ponds, in which there are sometimes Koi, turtles, and frogs (when the weather is warm enough). There's a Japanese garden in... More

I visited with 2 teenagers. The walk to the house was lovely. Walking through the carefully landscaped area around the outside of the Tea House was our favorite part. There was a beautiful shade garden with a water feature on one side, and a zen garden on another. The large pond near the house has koi. They are also building... More

The Japan House was the dream of a famous Japanese materials science professor while he was a visiting scholar at the UI many years ago. Since then it has grown into a tremendously popular attraction. In addition to the house itself there are ponds, gardens and even periodic tea ceremonies. For a recent open house the staff expected roughly 1000... More

I really miss the koi, ducks, and geese. The ponds no longer feel Japanese. They screwed them up with the renovation, but a lot of the other improvements are great.

This is within the arboretum area and may be of interest to a limited group of people. There was no access to the house, or much information about what went on inside, but got the impression it was sued for educational purposes.

A nice little theme park located within the main park. A tea ceremony was going on during out stop so we just walked around the gardens. It is not very large, maybe a 5 minute walk around the building. It incorporates the main ideas of a Japanese garden in a small setting. Worth the time and walk.

we halva pleasant walk over to the house, which unfortunately was not open to the public, but we had an interesting walk about the place. I personally liked the gravel, its very soothing for the mind to look at it. worth the visit, even when closed.

The best time to visit this awesome place is in August-October when flowers bloomed. It has a nice lake with a peaceful view. Morning walks are awesome.

Japan House is on the University of Illinois Campus. It features walk thru gardens, and on certain days and times the house itself is open to the public. Near by are two other gardens to walk thru too. Excellent adventures!
