Karera Waterfalls in Rutana South Burundi

Definitely worth it but only during rainy season, best time of the year would be the months around Christmas. Four falls in total, you can swim and stay all the time you want, normally there should be no one around. From The Karera Waterfalls you can visit the same day the most southern source of the White Nile in Rutovu and the "Faille des Allemands" with its impressive vista of deep canyons with Tanzania on the horizon. The Blue-Bay Resort in Rumonge is also not far and its 100% recommendable.

Karera Falls is actually about 4 waterfalls, all beautiful. Go prepared with sturdy shoes as reaching one requires a steep set of uneven stairs, but worth it. The local guide was excellent if you have someone with you that can translate Kirundi. It is a shame that it is so undeveloped (a little picnic area and locked bathrooms), about 10 miles of rough dirt road (probably really bad in wet season). The biggest problem though was arriving to discover that nonBurundians had to pay $20 (in American Dollars only)! As we didn't have, they finally accepted 60,000 BIF (Burundian Francs) each while the locals paid 5,0000. Without a native speaker we would have been in trouble and probably not able to go. Charging a little extra is OK, but not this for an undeveloped place. Could not find this listed on their information anywhere, but they had a paper in the "office" showing it. Not very welcoming to tourists. Sad because it is so beautiful.

BB Travel and Jeffrey Travels arranged for me to enjoy the Karera Waterfalls which are very beautiful waterfalls even in the dry season. Great place to pause, take in the beauty and enjoy a picnic lunch. From The Karera Waterfalls are well located with easy visits to the nearby German Waterfalls with it’s impressive vista of deep canyons. You can even see Tanzania on the horizon

Very unfortunate that such a natural beauty is lying unexplored and un-marketed in Burundi. It is a fantastic place but no infrastructure is placed that can make the visit memorable. Unfortunately, we visited in July that is during dry season from June to August and thus, the falls had less than 50% of water flowing from above. However, it must be great to watch from September to May.
It is about 2 hours drive from Bujumbura, near Gitega.
