It's necessary to walk about 3 km to get there from the nearest place you can park; it was a decent track through attractive forest surroundings with not too much climbing or descending and very few people. Unfortunately, the path to the top of the waterfall was closed off because of maintenance work and so we weren't able to use that path to go down to the bottom of the falls but had to take a more roundabout route, part of which was not very pleasant in terms of gradient and underfoot so some of us gave up. Those who got that far said the falls were very nice, though. Pleasant but perhaps not essential!

Its about a 15 to 20 min drive from sarajevo.. i suggest u lark ur car near this cafe.. just before these sign.. mind u u can take ur car further if u wish but cant go no further once u reach the wooden gates...
I chose to walk..it took about 4 hrs to do a whole walk around... lots of walking... very steep pathes.. plenty of signs to guide you.. the worst part is goin from the observation part where u can see the waterfall goin down.. very very steep...
But once u reach the waterfall its well worth it... i think i hung around for like 30 minutes... them view is so sureal.. there is a lil pond right under the falls.. take a dip.. plenty of mist to cool u down aswell.. the falls arent huge like Niagara Falls in Canada... but r the tallest in BiH...
Gettin back u r goin the other way.. plenty of red dots on trees to know ur on the right path.. and when u reach the end.. u will know cuz u will see parked cars and that lil cafe..
Well worth the time if u like nature and the views...

We've gone hiking here a few times as a family now. It is gorgeous and wonderful.
We just drove up in our regular car, which felt a little like pushing it's limits, but we made it and are so glad we did!
The road is narrow and parts are gravel, but doable. It's only about 11 kilometres past the stadium. You drive up Nahorevska behind the zoo and just keep going straight and up through a village looking neighbourhood and countryside. Then all of a sudden you are in the mountains.
We like parking near a funky little house at the ridge with a signpost pointing to cities around the world. It's a great view. Then we get to walk through the wide open fields on the way to the forest part of the walk. When we return we like to sit at that funky house and they serve beer and homemade apple juice. It's part of the experience.

From parking there you add about a half kilometre I'd guess of walking. Or you can drive farther along and park at a green gate that is the beginning of the walk along a wide trail/narrow road through forest and open clearings. The views remind me of the mountains in Switzerland. You just keep going until there is a sign pointing left to the waterfall. That's where the wide trail gets narrow and goes really through the forest for a little while before the viewpoint. There are signs throughout showing different native animals, birds and flowers of the area. The path has cool roots and is interesting. There are lots of trails all around, but we like the shortest option since we have little kids and the view point is safe with a railing.

Walking shoes- and water bottle- no strollers - not recommended for young children unless you are ready to carry them
About 7 kilometers walk
No you can not swim- the city/ valley view is breathtaking.
15 kilometers from the city. The road is bad . Locals are use to it but you have to maneuver around on one way gravel. Road is damaged by rainfall big holes and all... it is an adventure just getting there..
Once you arrived to the cafe ( little house) be ready for a long amazing walk.
The walk is a loop
2 loop options:
-Walk up (right path) through meadow then down along the fall( long walk down stairs) then follow the path back to cafe - some part is flat the last 1.5 kilometers is up hill- i did this one...
-Walk down( left side) through the forest to the bottom of the falls- walk up the stairs ( steep) and through the meadows or turn around and walk the hill up

No matter how you do you will walk up

It's really a great place.
It takes few hours walk to get there, so it's not for people who don't like hiking or to spend that much time in nature. But it's really worth it. Especially it's beautiful under the waterfall.
There is a great and very cheap restaurant on the starting point to drink a mountain tea or eat some domestic food.
A must see for nature fans.

A beautiful walk which is not very demanding. We took a taxi from Sarajevo to where the steep roads start, but it was a nice beginning to the hike. We had some food and drinks at Dragan before we headed off towards the waterfall. We were told it would take us 2 hours to get there, but it only took us an hour which I think goes for anyone who walks in an okey paste. Back again we took the longer route which was nice and quiet with not so many people. If you start from down the hill like us it will take you a little longer, but I really recommend walking up because of the beautiful scenery that you wouldn't be able to enjoy as much from a car. And Dragan's is a nice place to sit, enjoy the scenery and have some nice snacks and drinks before and after the hike.
Also, we took a taxi back and forth. It most likely won't be able to take you to Dragan's but to the beginning of the hill. For approximately 15-20km. Back to the city we ordered a taxi by phone, it came after 15min waiting and only cost 10km to the city from the village Nahorevo.

Waterfall Skakavac is located 12 km north of Sarajevo, above village Nahorevo. This is one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in BiH and a real tourist attraction. The waterfall is 98 meters high and it's located in the landscape of extraordinary beauty. Although it does not have a large flow of water, it is distinguished by extraordinary beauty, especially in winter when the ice overlaid slap and forms fantastic view. The surrounding area is one of the most heterogeneous in the region where dominates spruce-fir forest.

Enjoyed our awesome four hour hike to the Skakavac Falls. It is a rugged trail and you should wear appropriate shoes and clothing. The climb from the bottom of the falls to the top is challenging with a steep climb, but an amazing view fro the vantage point overlooking the Falls.
