About
The Irish National Stud combines an active role in the development & promotion of Irish thoroughbred bloodstock & as one of the country's major tourist attractions. Located in the beating heart of Ireland’s thoroughbred county, Co. Kildare, the Irish National Stud & Gardens is one of Ireland’s true treasures. Beginning in the early 1900s, the stud has produced some of the finest racehorses in Europe. It is one of the only thoroughbred breeding farms open to the public & its unique history & beauty are admired by visitors from around the globe. Visitors can view immaculately bred stallions & admire protective mares alongside their frolicking foals. There is also an opportunity to meet retired equine stars like Faugheen & Beef or Salmon on the stud’s ‘Living Legend's’ team. A visit to the stud’s new interactive centre, ‘The Irish Racehorse Experience’ truly brings to life the worlds of these magnificent animals. The grounds are also home to the Japanese Gardens & St Fiachras Garden.

- Reeves6824 contributionsSuperbReally good fun. The staff are all so knowledgable and enthusiastic, they clearly love the place and it’s easy to see why. Unfortunately we missed “the legends” as they were still on their holidays but have a great excuse to come back now! The Irish Racing Experience was a terrific surprise too. We were 9 old men in our 50’s and we had a great time.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 February 2023
- Ronnie LLisburn, United Kingdom16 contributionsHighlight of our tripHighlight of our Trip We visited in Feb 23 when obviously the gardens aren't at their best, but it was fantastic to see them in a different way with the structure of the landscaping and the planting much more visible. Downside, we are now going to have to go back when in full leaf. Then we did the tour of the Stud. Foaling is well underway and this was a fantastic and informative tour. I'm not a horsey person so I learnt so much. There was no looking at the watch to see how much longer to go. Would highly recommend a visit. The staff were excellent and a first rate cafe. Well done to everyone.Visited February 2023Written 9 February 2023
- Aoife WTrim, Ireland175 contributionsSuch a friendly, happy place to visitWe had the best afternoon at the National Stud. We done the guided tour with David and found the tour very informative, relaxed and up close and personal with the horses. The race horse experience was amazing and such great fun and the gardens are gorgeous. Every single staff member at the stud, are helpful, happy and welcoming. The gift shop was very well stocked and again, the staff were very helpful. We will definitely be back during the summer but will be buying a morning ticket and spending the whole day here. We loved every second of our experience here. Can’t wait to return.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 February 2023
- Katie H6 contributionsAmazing!Had a really good time, staff were extremely friendly and lots of new foals to see in the fields! We planned to have a look round for a bit to kill some time on a travelling day and ended up being there for three hours without noticing the time! The gardens were a lovely extra with a variety of fun paths to explore and the new experience was really informative, with the race at the end being great fun. The restaurant was lovely, staff once again very nice and really lovely food. It’s a good idea to wear a good pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy! Would definitely go back again!Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 February 2023
- Ethel R2 contributionsA race to rememberA recent day trip to The National Stud and Japanese Gardens was excellent. Particularly loved the racehorse interactive experience, especially the race itself and the chance to be a commentator. It was brilliant! Thank you.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 February 2023
- cathywhelan1968Dublin, Ireland95 contributionsAmazing Experience - Newborn foals and great fun in stunning surroundingsI brought a group of tourism students to the Stud and Gardens last week and we had an amazing time. The staff were really friendly and Dave gave us a fantastic tour around the grounds. We got to see new born foals and some of the most famous Irish stallions including "Invincible Spirit". This is just a great place to visit and is so interesting and fun for all age groups and nationalities. I highly recommend it. Well done to all there. - Naomi K10 contributionsIncredible place, lovely staff, delicious food and world famous horsesWow, this place is amazing. Coming over from the UK, the Irish national stud and the Guinness factory were must-do's! We booked general admission and then joined the 11am AM guided tour (no extra cost) The lady was brilliant, so knowledgeable and also hilarious. No area was out of bounds, you can also walk around on your own, you don't have to join the tour. The in foal mates were out in the field at 11am but we went back at 2pm and they were all in their stables. We were able to see a mare with a 1 day old foal too, everything is so chilled about the place. The tour was 1 hour then we went to the restaurant. Delicious food and lots of gluten free options! A little bit pricey, but we found Ireland was pricey on the whole. The Japanese garden was mesmerising. We did the virtual racehorse trainer. This was included in the entry fee, we did no have to pay extra. No under 8s allowed but that didn't apply to us. I won my race! There is a video recording available, but unfortunately it wasn't working for our race :( I would definitely recommend and I would definitely return.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2023
- Geraldine CBrussels, Belgium13 contributionsA wonderful day out for sol.It was wonderful to see the newborn foals with their mothers. The National Stud is definitely worth a visit. The Japanese Gardens and St. Fiacre’s garden are an absolute delight. Ww had lunch in the café after our visit. There was a great choice of food and we were served by, pleasant staff. Well done to everyone involved in running this entire facility.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 March 2023
- R RNavan, Ireland3 contributionsEnjoyable visitWe had a lovely day at the National Stud despite the rain. Jamie was an excellent tour guide. Really enjoyed the walk around the stud learning about and seeing the foals and mares. The information centre/experience was good fun and interesting. We didn't spend a lot of time in the Japanese Gardens due to the rain but can appreciate the peacefulness of the gardens.Visited March 2023Written 18 March 2023
- BenABNDunstable, United Kingdom29 contributionsMini break treatWe took the guided tour lead by Eleanor and despite the downpour it was an excellent tour. We would highly recommend and hopefully the weather gods will be kind on your tour . Spotlessy clean despite the rain and mud. This visit was part of a surprise birthday treat/trip. You don't have to have any knowledge of horses as you come away feeling you are on first name terms with each one. Lots of other things for a family visit which are included in the tick price - Japanese Gardens, St Fiarcras garden, virtual horse racing experience, children's play area, cafe(highly recommend the fruit scone) shop. Staff are all very welcoming and are obviously happy in their environment.Visited March 2023Written 22 March 2023

Totally enjoyed our trip to The National Stud but one observation which upset us was the severe case of foot rot with a lot of the sheep. You could actually smell it while walking. We were very surprised that such a thing be allowed and it would be a form of animal cruelty.

Do not bring kids here, ever! What a terrible experience at the Irish National Stud & Gardens today! My two daughters are horse mad so it was something we had been planning for a while. We booked the Irish Racehorse Experience for the whole family. On arrival we were told at reception that our 4 year old son could not do the race at the end of the experience as he is too small. We were fine with that, we should have read the details at the time of booking. However, when we went to go into the experience, the woman at reception told us that my 4 year old son was not allowed to bring the small, foam sword he had with him (he was dressed up for Halloween as were many kids) in with him. As anyone with any knowledge and understanding of 4 year old kids (this woman clearly had neither) should know, taking the toy away was not going to end well. He got really upset, crying and screaming. The woman could not care less about the upset child, she did not bat an eyelid. My wife ended up taking my son back out the playground rather than going in to the experience (which she had paid for!). Unfortunately, it gets even worse. After completing the Irish Racehorse Experience, the man who works there was making conversation, asking if we had enjoyed it. I made the point that my 10 year old daughter (who was there with me along with my other kids) loved horses and dreams of being a jockey. He looked at her and told her that she was too big to be a jockey!!!! I kid you not. Her poor face, she is extremely tough and brave and didn't want to show it, but I could see she was devasted. My other kids were shocked too. This eejit went off on his merry way, completely oblivious to the upset he had caused. I have never encountered such rudeness and a lack of self awareness as these two. Horrible!

We visited the Irish National Stud and Gardens and learned more about the gorgeous stallions and services provided at this facility. The horses are obviously very well cared for with huge pastures and stalls and the number of employees to care for them. It was fun to see the colts and fillies playing in the fields and the retired stallions enjoying their pasture as well.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Extremely charming knowledgeable helpful staff. Great fun day out. Far more to see and do than the National Stud Newmarket. Excellent cafe with wide range of food and cakes. A must experience especially for racing and horse fans. Seeing the retired old chasers was delightful. We went at the wrong time of year to see the foals but had a truly great time.

We arrived at the stud on a wet day but luckily the rain stayed away while we were there.
The stud provided a guide who took us around the horse areas, she was very good, a bit of a character who explained everything very well and answered anyone’s questions .
We saw a couple of the resident stallions and some of the young weanling who were frolicking in their paddock .
She also showed us the Legends, very well performed racehorses who had been retired and were living out their days being well cared for here at the stud.
It was all very interesting.
We then visited the Japanese garden on our own, a great garden set up by the original owner of the stud, he brought out a landscaper from Japan in the 1800s to build and design it. Very nice time we had there, the gardens are beautiful even on a dull day .

The gardens and stud farm are beautiful and informative, the restaurant's chef was Ballymaloe trained, but the interactive and simulated horse auction and racing was our favorite part.

During our 12 day coach tour of Ireland, the National Stud farm was one of our early stops. If you love horses, this is a must see. If you don't, it's still worth the stop. Very nice tour, and our tour guide was very informative. The horses were beautiful, and my wife enjoyed feeding carrots to several of them. The young lady who did our tour was also very knowledgeable. The Japanese Garden, which we walked through after the farm tour, is very nice and well maintained. But the horse farm tour is what it's all about.

I would allow 2-3 hours to see everything at a leisurely pace. There is also a wonderful interactive exhibit that gives lots of information and is well-worth seeing if you're a racing fan. And there is a wonderful cafe for lunch. I made an entire afternoon of my visit.

Yes! Nice playground but also young kids the Japanese Gardens as they can walk along the stepping stones in the stream to caves and other little hideaways.
The fairy walk in st. Fiachra’s garden is a major hit too with lots of fairy doors and little descriptions of each of the fairies.
Could we walk from kildare town centre to this place?
