A very beautiful church, very different to many of the others you would see in Ethiopia. Take your time to look all the way around.

This is a large church and is relatively modern which was built in order that women could attend. The church has many superb paintings of biblical stories. .

A beautiful church was rebuilt during the era of the emperor Halie Selassie in 1950. Believed to be much more older than that.

Not really all that exciting, but worth a look if you are in the area. Plenty of more interesting churches all around.

The Church decorated and coated with plenty of fabulous paintings and some of them are well preserved, the building is just a simple place but the paintings make it very special. If the priest is in a Good mood he will show you the paintings which are hidden behind the curtains

This building seemed more like a monument than a church. I suppose that is just how churches were when it was built.
There is an old book with interesting script and a large number of paintings "hidden behind curtains."

We went to the church of St Mary of ZION. This is an impressive church, internally and externally. A priest opened for us, the 110 year book “The miracles of Mary”. This book is kept will covered, to prevent light affecting it.

Emperor Hailie Selasie had this church built so that women could be included in the worship service. It is still in active use and hundreds of thousands congregate here during major festivals. This is considered the centre of orthodox Christianity. The interior of the church is under a large, high dome, with four small domes at the four directions of the compass. Each of those is split into two more domes, so the effect is pleasing. A number of murals depicting the life of Christ decorate the walls. While the church is attractive, it is not opulent, unlike major churches of other religions. But those who adhere to this faith appear highly devout. Next to the main church is the first older church that is barred to women. In it is a holy book 1,000 years old. The priest there will uncover it for you. The inside of the church has massive pillars and a high ceiling, but does not have much adornment. Interestingly, it does have a picture of a black Mary and Black Christ, which I thought was fitting. Also on the grounds is a small museum that is most unattractive but houses a magnificent collection of priceless treasures. There are crowns from many kings in silver, gold, and precious stones. Also elaborate robes used by the king and nobles, as well as many other important objects. Unfortunately, the lighting is terrible and the place is dingy. A new, modern museum is in the process of being built. Perhaps, most importantly, a small building between the two churches is said to contain the original ark of the covenant, the most holy of objects in the religion. My guide told me a long and fascinating story of how this came to be. A good guide is important in truly appreciating this site. It is a worthwhile place to visit.

It is one of the best locations in Aksum a visitor must take time. The newest church was built by Emperor Hailesillassie but the Ark of the Covenant is believed to be hosted in the church built by Fasiledes.
