St Lucia is paradise! My husband and I climbed the Gros Piton (we are 51 and in moderate shape). Start early (7:00 am) and bring a lot of water (2 litres each). Our guide, Abi, was the best!!! It is an uphill, gruelling hike but it is doable. The couple behind us were 70! It took us four hours and we have never sweat so much...the last 1/2 hour the heat was killing us (so don't start any later than 7:30). It was such a great experience though and reaching the top was a highlight for us! The guides are amazing. Do it and for the remainder of your holiday you will gaze at the Gros Piton and marvel that you climbed to the top.

The reviews universally say that Gros Piton is streneous. We are a reasonably fit couple aged 64 & 72. It is a bit of a scramble; but our benchmark of 1,000 ft per hour was pretty accurate. 2 1/4 hours to go from 600 ft to 2,620 ft, and the same time to descend. The ascent started at 09:15 a.m. and happened in shade, which was great. The descent was more sunny, hence more hot. The view along the way and from the top were very nice.

We set out at 7am with the goal to only hike halfway. We are 50 & 55 and while physically active and exercise regularly we are not accustomed to hiking rocks and boulders. Everyone also said the best views are at the halfway point. Shane was our guide and was excellent and great to have along the trek to the halfway mark. It is difficult so be sure to wear proper hiking boots, start early due to the heat and bring plenty of water. We will be back next year and plan to hike the entire route.

Took a ship excursion on a catamaran from the port in Castries, St. Lucia to view the Pitons. Well maintained boat with helpful, friendly and informative crew. Cruised down the coast while the guide crew member explained about building the villages and roads, talked about the infrastructure of the island and,of course, highlighted mega expensive resorts. Sighted some dolphins playing alongside the boat. Captain took us close enough to see the detail of the sharp drop of the twin peaks to the ocean. Had a short swim stop. Was a great way to see the Pitons without having to spend a long time in a vehicle.

I took part in a Princess Cruise on the Queen of the Carnival which is a catamaran. The scenery throughout was stunning and the mini-cruise was very good. The highlight was The Pitons which were outstanding. We only viewed from the water but it was well worth it - and avoided a long dusty drive in searing heat!!

These mountains are the symbol of the island. They are a unique geological structure due to their size and somewhat odd location being right on the water. Many islands that have mountains like this are centrally located, but not these. The larger one has a hiking trail, but if you are not physically fit, then seek advise before trying to climb it. If you visit St. Lucia and travel to the south you will encounter these unique peaks.

We made our way early to the Pitons meeting point and began our climb at 7.20 am with our guide Larry. Larry was knowledgeable about the area and walked at a good pace to get us up and down in 4 hours. The climb itself was not too bad it was more coping with the heat whilst climbing.
