Once again Prairie Wolf has been selected to represent the Lake County Forest Preserves in its annual challenge, Hike Lake County.
I suspect it was chosen because it is like a microcosm of the entire system -- featuring water, prairie, wetlands, woodlands; wildflowers; as well as birds, frogs, turtles, and other animals -- in one very easy visit. The signage is good; the parking adequate.
See my earlier reviews for more details: May 2020; October 2019; September 2018; and May 2016.

If you're looking for a short, level walk or bike ride through beautiful surroundings, this is a good choice. There never were shelters, restrooms or drinking fountains at Prairie Wolf, so very little had to be done to make this a safe destination during the Covid restrictions.
There are 10 parking spaces in the small lot -- only one is ADA.
There is often standing water and frankly, I always give it time to dry out after it rains before I visit.
The preserve is named for John Kinzie Clark, an early pioneer whose Native American name was "Nominoa" -- which means prairie wolf.

That peaceful stream in the slideshow is the Middle Fork of the Chicago River.
The online hiking difficulty ratings for this site are "easy" and "moderate". The trail loops are both short and flat -- making for a perfect family outing.

This yea,r twenty-acre Prairie Wolf was selected to be one of the trails of the annual Lake County Forest Preserves hiking challenge.
Restored in the '90s, the area now has wet prairie, wetlands, oak woodlands and a flat trail for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing.
Bring your water bottle and insect repellent. Don't forget your camera (or phone). You may see Cedar Waxwings, Great Egrets, Indigo Buntings and the occasional raptor, as well as the ubiquitous robins, sparrows, blackbirds, cardinals, finches, etc.
There is a small parking lot accessible from Highway 22, east of Waukegan road.
open from 6:30 a.m. till sunset

Neither large nor awesome this is a nice neighborhood gem. Never crowded, and a nice place to ride a bike or take a walk. Some lovely gazebo type coverings on property. Backs up to office buildings and residential. Area is flat. I often take a loop on the trail on my way to or from a nearby trail (i.e. east to Greenbay Trail or headed west to Des Plaines River Trail) if i am on Route 22. Route 22 is a fairly busy street, 45 MPH, and a sidewalk but no real trail for most parts. Next door is also Panera, Grocery Store, some sandwich shops and other eating places.

Prairie Wolf Slough is a great place for a short walk or bike ride. The area is very flat. Although it is off busy Route 22, it can be reached by connecting paths by bike or foot. The parking lot is small, but there never seems to be very many people in the park.

There are 10 parking spaces here, really nice place to walk or short bike ride. I think 1 lap is about a quarter mile or so, nice gravel, open all year.

I have been here many times, walking from my house in very urban Deerfield, or riding here on my bike. I have taken my dog many times. You can get here in the most scenic way by connecting with the beautiful trail next to a tributary of the Chicago River, one that flows next to Deerfield High School. It is beautiful, a slough reclaimed from farmland, and if my memory serves me correctly, reclaimed by Deerfield High School students and their teachers. There is even some information to educate us on how important these sloughs are and how they work. This is a great place to visit.

Called both Prairie Wolf AND Prairie Wolf Slough.....I think because nobody is quite sure how to pronounce "slough" or what it means. It rhymes with "glue," and means "swamp," "marsh," or "deep mud." The trail is sometimes flooded after a heavy rain, making "deep mud" a good name. It also has a stream, mini lake, and bird watching area. There's a small parking lot off 22.
Your dog is welcome.
