As you would expect at working farm, the gift shop sells tomatoes (heirloom, cherry, hybrid, etc.). Check the fridge for green beans, radishes, peppers, zucchini, carrots, etc. Look for pumpkins in October.
Eggs go on sale every Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.: small/medium are $7 a dozen; large/extra large are $8 a dozen.
Don't miss the new farm-themed playground, highlighted by Grant Woods' quotation: "All the really good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow."
See my earlier reviews (October 1, 2018 and May 23, 2020) for more details.

The 16-acre Historic Wagner Farm, located at 1520 Wagner Road in Glenview, Illinois, is the last remnant of the farm owned by members of the Wagner family since their arrival from Trier, Germany, in the 1850s. Irt was owned by the family until the last surviving member Rose Wagner died in 1997. After her death, local citizens persuaded the Glenview Park District to purchase and preserve the property as a historic working farm for the education and enjoyment of the community. And so it has been. Historic Wagner Farm is open to the public year-round, from dawn to dusk. It provides a unique opportunity for city slickers to learn about life on the farm during the 20th century. Visitors can learn about livestock and crops, tour the Wagners' 1920 farmhouse that featured electric lighting and indoor plumbing, step inside a two-story silo, go inside the chicken coop and see if the hens are laying eggs, see the draft horses at work, visit the livestock in the Wagner barn and livestock sheds, learn about where the food we eat comes from, pretend to run a farm stand, climb into a corn crib, swing on a tire, interact with a life-size dairy cow sculpture and explore the many interactive exhibits in the Historic Wagner Farm Heritage Center. Finally, shop at the 1930s grocery store and purchase a souvenir from the Museum Store. And if you are planning to make a Saturday visit, make time to browse through the Glenview Farmers Market, a popular attraction at the farm since 2007.

Driving through Chicago's suburbs today, a visitor finds it difficult to imagine how the landscape looked as recently as the 1950s and 1960s, even the 1970s. My wife and I, who remember what the south suburban area once was, like to take those kind of drives and recall the way it was. So it is in north suburban Glenview and the Historic Wagner Farm. Located at 1510 Wagner Road, this 18.6-acre farm is owned by the Glenview Park District and is the last remnant of a much larger farm once owned and operated by members of the Wagner family that arrived in this North Shore area from Trier, Germany in the 1850s. The last surviving member of the family died in 1997. The farm has been preserved as an historic working farm for the education and enjoyment of the community. There is a restored farmhouse and barn, pigs and chickens and draft horses and programs and events for visitors to experience life on a farm. Swing on a tire, climb into a corn crib, run a farm stand, learn about the farm's livestock, step inside a two-story silo, learn about the history of silos, browse through a 1930s grocery store and learn about where the food we eat comes from. For someone who once earned some spending money by digging asparagus on a farm that is now a shopping mall, a visit to Historic Wagner Farm is a time for pleasant remembrance.

We made a trip to Wagner farm to see the animals and buy some pumpkins. Kids had a great time with many things to see and do while getting our pumpkins to carve. Wagner Farm is a great place for families to visit!

A great place for visiting with farm animals and seeing how the farm runs. They also have events monthly plus a 4-H club.

A wonderful way to spend a few hours as a family - be it watching the animals, petting the animals, learning about the animals, or watching them being fed & groomed. There’s also a very nice old fashioned ice cream fountain with a few outdoor rocking chairs. Free parking across the street on Wagner. It’s a regular go to place for my grand kids.

Not much is available for a grandparent to do with an 18 month old or younger. Staff handling animals as they walk around was cool. Our grandson could pet the animals who are small but so much larger than he is! The hayride was a fun experience for him and just being up close to the farm animals was a treat for him. For us!

I took my 2 youngest grandsons here on a beautiful warm day. I drive past Wagner Farm everyday but had never stopped to enjoy it. The boys, ages 5 & 7, loved seeing & petting the horses, who came up to the fence! There were cows to see, chickens, & baby calves. There was an old fashioned grocery store which had an antique wagon with fake horse attached. Children were able to climb into the wagon & pretend they were on a journey. I took pictures of my grandsons while they were in the wagon. Historic Wagner Farm has something for everyone! The 3 of us sure had a great time!

How much time should I allow to go through the farm with elementary kids?
Written 24 March 2018
It is free unless there is a special event such as Bacon Fest. The only time it costs is if you buy ice cream at the shop!
