We visited here on our drive from Celje to Novo Mesto. The large walled 15th C complex sits in a quiet valley surrounded by hilly vineyards. Even though it was closed, we walked around everywhere possible including visiting the French Gothic Church.
This monastery would be an excellent destination in better weather than today's rain.

I think that this is one of the best active Carthusian monasteries in Europe. Place is organized for silence and to pray and not for mass tourism and big groups. You can come in silence and small groups and it is allowed to enter famous Gothic church. Monks can show you a presentation of the history and architecture. Show room is near the old church. You will see the active part of the monastery just from distance. It is possible to visit small souvenir shop with books, small souvenirs and products of monks. Very famous are bottles with brandy and big pears, grown in the bottles. You can also visit private ethnographic museum with old houses of a farm near the parking. Take your time for a visit.

This is Europe’s westernmost Carthusian monastery and the only one of four original charterhouses in Slovenia still functioning. Located in quite a remote location you can get free access to the Church of the Holy Trinity, a rare example of early French Gothic style. Inside it is very simple almost devoid of any furniture or ornamentation. The alter is a simple grey stone supported by two other stones. There is a superb cross ribbed vaulted ceiling. You are also allowed access to a small chapel in the main building. The wine and brandy they manufacture on site is available for purchase from the porters house. The whole place is an oasis of calm set in a beautiful location. Worth a detour if in the area.
There is a 25 minute film that provides background to the monastery and their work, the cost is 5 euro per person, which also allows free access to the nearby open air museum (reviewed separately). There is a minimum charge of 20 euros, so unless you are a group of 4, the cost of the film is probably too prohibitive.

Calm in the middle of Carniolan Woods; with (recorded) music of monks, this ancient carthusian chapel still echoes the prayer life of past centuries.
