Visited Millennium Park on a super hot and humid day. My daughter was really looking forward to cooling off a little in the water that usually sprays out of the mouths of the people.
The rest of the park was open and great but for some reason the geniuses that run this park decided not to turn on the fountains that spray out water because of Covid. Not sure how doing this would help stop the spread of Covid considering it is outdoors and everything else is open.
If they are really that concerned about people getting Covid from a fountain of water, have people line up and go one at a time. Or put up a sign that you have to wear a mask to go in the fountain. Instead, they just turn it off and ruin any type of positive experience.

Covid restrictions have closed off parts of this area and certainly no waterworks at this time. It seems a little barren this visit and didn’t appear to draw much of an audience. When restrictions are lifted this will be filled with tourists/children wading in the water and enjoying the view. Other parts of the park were busy but this not so much.

Crown fountain stands in the Millennium park, close to the Cloud gate. Likewise, it's a big attraction and kind of fountain I've seen nowhere else.
Two glass towers facing each other with changing human faces projections and spilling water all around. Fun for kids and interesting for adults.

This fountain fits in well with the rest of MIllenium Park. The massive LED screen adds a modern element that is very intriguing. The fountain itself is shallow if you just want to walk across it or you can get wet if you choose to have the massive LED person "spit" at you. A really new vision on what a fountain can be.

Unlike Loop artworks by Picasso, Chicago, Miro, and Calder that celebrate "the City of Chicago," two installations in Millennium Park and one in a park south of the Art Institute focus on "the people of Chicago," or more specifically how the people of Chicago inhabit public spaces like parks. Like "the Bean," Plensa's Crown Fountain (2 minutes away) is an interactive work that focuses more on "people of the city" than "the city itself." 1,000 rotating photos create a sense of "the people," all the people of Chicago. The work is playful and serious. Water spurts from the photos' mouths. Kids play in the water. Water is life. Chicago's people give life (water) to the city, bring happiness to the children.

A great place to hangout on a warm day. It was quite busy. Benches line the water features. You can sit and relax or dip your toes in the cooling water. It is a free attraction near the Bean. I recommend a visit.

This is a fun feature in Millennium Park. We saw it multiple times including once in the hot middle of the day. This is when kids of all ages enjoyed the cool waters, including those coming out of the face screens. We also saw it when there were a variety of different faces looking across at each other. Again a fun feature to a great park.

Sine 2004, Crown Fountain, designed by the renowned Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, became one of the famous attractions in Millennium Park.
The fountain has a unique, ultra modern design: the monitors of the two 50ft (15m) tall towers with LED screens project digital video images of real people -- citizen of Chicago. The portrait images of people change in timed intervals, and finally at the end of each appearance on the screen, a water spout comes from their mouths.
Needless to say, that Crown Fountain is very popular with younger visitors -- kids jump and splash in the water of the flat, black-granite reflecting pool, play and run around, giggle and laugh -- having really great fun in summer! There are solid stone benches around the perimeter of the pool.
The fountain is named after the sponsor of the project -- Lester Crown and his family.
Crown Fountain is easy to find, it's located on the west side of the Millennium Park, near the corner of E Randolph and S Michigan Ave. The fountain is open during spring -- early fall months of the year: from May through October.

It's just when you think that you've 'seen them all' - here's a totally unconventional, cool video sculpture for you! Changing, smiling, shooting water ... Captivating.
I simply can't stop admiring the limitless artistic power of the world-class designers, and Jaume Plensa is unquestionably one of the greatest examples of unstoppable creativity and an absolutely original vision of the world... and its people.
Chicago and its dedicated sponsors like Mr.Crown are giving the biggest treat for all its citizen and for visitors from all over the world.
Thank you for the ART!

This is a fantastic part of Millennium Park. You always see so many smiles - from the kids who are enjoying the water and facial expressions on the fountain, the family members watching them, or anybody else that passes by or sits and watches.
It’s fun no matter who you are. Treat yourself and enjoy it - watch, listen or get wet!

How often do the fountains “spit” during the summer season? Is it like the Buckingham Fountain and turns on a certain time every hour or is it every x minutes throughout the day?
Written 3 July 2023
To be honest I’m not sure but when we were there it seemed to be very frequent because there were children playing in it for the duration of time we were there.

Is there a changing room near Crown Fountain?
Written 11 July 2016
Crown Fountain is not a swimming pool. It never gets deeper than your ankle. Nobody changes into bathing suits. They wade and kick and splash and little ones think it's heaven. Kick off your shoes and join the fun

We will be visiting Chicago from Oct 31 to Nov 3 - will the fountains water features operate during this time frame??
Written 10 October 2015
The fountain's water feature operates from mid-spring thru' till mid-fall... so I guess it just depends on the weather in any particular year. Mid-fall is so ambiguous!!
