Rappottenstein is an amazing fortress castle in a land full of them. It is well worth the drive from the Spitz area of the Wachau Valley. Roads are clearly marked - make sure you have a detailed map and directions. It sits well above the valley with magnificent views. It is guided tours only, on the hour, and only in German. Our one fervent wish is that there had been at least a tour transcript on paper available in English as we were so curious and so disappointed that we were unable to understand the tour guide. Wait outside the main door of the castle and promptly on the hour, the door opens and you can go in and buy your tickets and take the tour. No tickets available in the ice cream café nearby. The fortification is incredible with excellent turrets and towers. There is a restaurant inside that is perfect for a special late lunch or dinner - it is very romantic and very unique.

I stayed at Burg Rappottenstein for a week and fell in love with the castle and the town. The guided castle tour in incredible! Alfred, our tour guide, is a Rappottenstein native and used to be an altar boy at the castle chapel before it closed for services in the early 60s! The castle, really a fortress, was built in the 12th century and has never been conquered, which also means it has never been ransacked. The furniture and frescoes in the upstairs dining hall are from the 1600s. You read that right. 400-year-old furniture and wall paintings, all in incredible condition. You can rent rooms and stay here for about 70EURO a night, which would be money well spent. We went out to the two restaurants in town (very good), drank the local beer (Zwettler, REALLY good), and got breakfast from the local bakery (delicious). I will be back to visit Rappottenstein, and I look forward to bringing my family back here with me.

This is a wonderful piece of Austrian history and amazing to visit but....

....as there are so many castles in Austria and so much competition this Burg is 'off the beaten path.'

Cannot tour the Castle by yourself...must take a Guided Tour.

My Austrian friends translated for me and I had a small one page printed guide. The Guide spoke softly and raced 20 of us through the Tour.

The Castle needs to embrace modern multi lingual tour technogy.

As a place - marvellous.

As an experience - could do better..

But... please visit! Its beautiful...

If you are Rappottenstein, this is a must stop. There is great history and wonderful views. And at the end, you can enjoy a great lunch at the cafe on the premises. I highly recommend that you hike there from Rappottenstein.
