Fermilab is a gem in IL and the US. An amazing place with truly brilliant people. They love having visitors and sharing what they do, and why they do it. Having a bison herd is pretty cool too! Highly recommend.

Fermi has programs for all ages on their science led by highly qualified and enthusiastic staff. While visiting though, there's buffalo on the property, biking, and hiking!

How accessible is it to the public. I know yrs ago I would drive there and watch the bison with my boys. After 9/11 access was restricted. I haven't been there in years but will be in IL this summer can I just drive in or do I have to make special arrangements?

To further clarify what Anna G said, when driving onto the site you just need to show your driver's license at the gate. If you bike or walk onto the site, there is no check in.

Hi- My wife and I are looking for holiday rental accommodation from August 5 to 15th. Our son is doing a summer internship at Fermilab and we are travelling from the UK to visit him. Is there likely to be decent (budget priced) accommodation in the area or even on the site itself?

Not on site. However, the Fairfield Suites in Geneva may be a good option for your needs. You may also look in Aurora or Batavia.
