Has a Confederate section with many historic graves. Two governors are buried here. Many interesting markers.

I did not know that there was a section of this cemetery dedicated to this period of U.S. history. If you are an avid watcher of horror movies you would be very surprised to find out the Oak Hill Cemetery is a top filming location for Hollywood! To avoid the confusion regarding closed entrances, I would stop at the visitor information center in the town hall building. They have a lot of information about Newnan sites without all of the hype. I found the cemetery very relaxing.

I love visiting Oak Hill, especially the Confederate section. Newnan was a Confederate hospital town and also the site of the Battle of Brown's Mill, a decisive Confederate victory. There are brave Confederates from every Southern state buried there.

Guided tours are available of the cemetery and I would recommend those. Walking through the cemetery is ambitious because it is so large. The older portion across the street is interesting, but there are few markers or information to tell you about the people who are buried there.

My husband and I love walking through old cemeteries and when we passed this one we knew we had to turn around and go back. The only problem was it had just stopped raining so the ground was very wet but that didn't stop us.

This cemetery is the final resting place for soldiers who died in the Civil War as well as the Revolutionary War. It's extremely well kept as is the road that takes you through the cemetery.

I did see something I have never seen before...1 - 2 foot long live worms all over the place (in the grass and on the road). I'm assuming all the rain brought them to the surface. If you love old historic cemeteries, this one is definitely driving a bit out of your way to see.

My parents are buried here and it is always well kept. The only thing that could be better is when they cut the grass they could clean around the head stones

Take this tour in October. It is just one weekend, so don't miss it!

There is nothing spooky about this tour. It is chocked full of history and presented both tastefully and respectfully. If I were a resident of this cemetery, I woukd look forward to it.

Last year's theme was "Angels Among Us" and included several storytellers in historic costumes, a talented fiddle player and storyteller dressed in uniform, bagpipes, beautiful ballet dancers and singers which included two little girls who stole the show singing "Angels Among Us."

Local artisans and authors displayed their wares outside the beautiful McRitchie Hollis Museum where the tour begins.

Newnan was a hospital town during the civil war, and it was notable that the Union graves were treated just as well as the Confederate graves. Union soldiers were also treated at the hospitals. The cemetery is old, going back to the 1850s. Newnan was founded in 1828. The graves are mostly kept up very well.

We recently had the honor of placing flags at the graves of service members for Veteran's Day. I've driven past this beautiful cemetery for the past 12 years we've lived in Newnan, and I've always been intrigued by it, but never stopped. Not only is it a beautiful setting, but the history represented there is profound. It certainly made me proud to see how many of our local families served in some of our country's greatest conflicts. So sad to see how many infants and babies lie there, reminding me of how fortunate we are to have food on our table and access to good medical care. It also raised many questions among the children from local families with us about their ancestors and legacy. A historic place of beauty to learn and reflect.
