Hills & Dales Estate is the historic home and garden of textile magnate Fuller E. Callaway. Located in LaGrange, Georgia. The centerpiece of the estate is a beautiful Georgian-Italian style home built in 1916. Designed by the noted architectural firm of Hentz & Reid it is one of the finest homes built toward the end of the country house era. The home was occupied by two generations of the Callaway family and contains all of the families' original furnishings. Formal gardens surrounding the home and were created by the original owner of the property, Sarah Coleman Ferrell prior to the Civil War. Within the gardens visitors will see many of Sarah's religiously inspired planting including a large planting of the word "God" and her personal motto "God is Love." The extensive formal boxwood garden also feature an herb garden, greenhouse, fountains and garden sculpture. The 35-acre estate, complemented by a Visitor Center containing family artifacts and displays, opened to the public in 2004. In May of 2010 twenty additional rooms on the second and third floor of the home opened for tours.

Beautiful home and gardens with a great history, really quite impressive. We have been to other impressive homes such as Biltmore and this one on a much smaller scale (although 30 rooms is not quite small), is worth a visit. Preliminary 15 minute film is well done and sets the stage for the actual tour and subsequent unguided walk through... More

We visited in late March when there should have been a multitude of azaleas, but a frost a couple of weeks earlier had killed the flowers. We started with a tour of the house. The guide was extremely well versed on the history and particulars of the 100 year old house which had been in one family always. Then we... More

It is difficult to really describe how spectacular this house and grounds are. Since it was lived in up until the 1990s, there is a fascinating mix of decor, and pretty much the whole house is open for the tour. The guides are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It's hard to comprehend how much work went into and still goes into... More

My husband and I visited this home on a beautiful spring afternoon. Our tour guide, Sue Ellen, was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the house and the family. The gardens and grounds were very nice as well. I wouldn't make a special trip to LaGrange to see this home but if you're passing through and want a little local history, it's... More

Wonderful tour guide with lots of info! Most parts of the Villa are not roped off but you aren't to touch anything inside. The gardens are wonderful but many flowers were affected buy a cold front that came thru before our visit. Still lots of flowers blooming in the greenhouse and some outdoors.

Especially if you are visiting Callaway Gardens, visit the Callaway house. Its not a museum, it's a private home and the atmosphere is so warm. The entire house is open, you see every room on every floor. Its absolutely beautiful. The architecture, the furniture, the decor is to die for. I especially loved the kitchen. It is not wheelchair friendly... More

My docent, Claire, was fabulous! She not only knew all the Ferrell and Callaway stories and details of items int he house, but also threw in many tidbits to make the tour relevant to me, in particular, by finding out my interests before the tour began. She even made restaurant suggestions that proved, afterwards, to be spot-on! The house tour... More

Picked up a local attraction magazine and discovered a special place to visit in LaGrange, Georgia. Hills and Dales Estate is a beautiful old home built in the early 1900's. Has always been used as a multi-generational family home that has been maintained as it was when the family lived there. The house tour goes room to room with many... More
