There are still 6 windmills along the former shores of Schermer lake. It is hard to imagine that this vast lake and the nearby Beemster lake were once flood areas where the Northsea waters would intrude without problem. The Beemster was reclaimed in 1612 and Schermer lake would soon follow in 1635. Strong dikes were built and windmills pumped out the water.

One can't visit The Netherlands without visiting a windmill. Water management is so ingrained in the history of the country (and literally made the country) that to pass up a visit to a windmill is passing up what makes The Netherlands tick. The Schermer Mills are really amazing to see in action and provide an excellent history of how water management worked (and still works) 300 years ago. Not only are the windmills majestic and beautiful, but they serve such a practice purpose in the country. While not particular close to anything, the Schermer Mills are a must see when in The Netherlands.

By sunset i have to get these outstanding composition of the three windmills in Schermerhorn. I decided to get the contrast of the beauty by sunset though even in any day the mills are so interesting and awesome to see.

Maybe because i am Asian i was awed by the sight of these windmills. I am proud to recommend this place for everybody. You won't regret.

This is defently worth a visit! The place has a really good atmosphere.
Our "guide" was really really good! he told us so many interresting things about the windmills, and he really helped making the experience authentic!
We were lucky to be there when he started the windmill, and it was amazing!

The Beemster Polder is a Unesco World Heritage Site and the scenery is just beautiful. Tour one of the windmills--the internal mechanics are pretty amazing and the tour guides volunteers---with a wealth of information!

As we couldn't go on a vacation outside europe, we did day trips around in the Netherlands. One of our destination is north of the Netherlands. We found one of the "Schermer molens" as soon as we left the village Grootschermer. Most of the mills are located along the "molendijk" and "Noordervaart" on the open field. It's much better than in the commercial windmill village "Zaanse Schans".

This is a must see attraction which is easily accessed from Amsterdam. The variety of sights here and the chilled atmosphere make this a great place to wander around and enjoy the day.

provides an excellent view of how polders and mills work, the mill is working so you can see it yourself. Fees are very affordable. If you go to North Holland, you must see this.

A very nice small museum that allows you to understand the how and the why for all the windmills in The Netherlands. The welcome video is multilingual, but most of the displays are in in English only. It is a bit out of the way, but I was able to get here by train and bus from Amsterdam. A wonderful "fresh air" perspective after a few days of dealing with Amsterdam. I also walked over and walked through the small village of Schermerhorn. A wonderful day outing.
