About
The Norton Museum of Art was founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton (1875-1953) and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton (1881-1947). The Museum’s permanent collection now consists of more than 7,600 works in five curatorial departments: European, American, Chinese, Contemporary and Photography. The Museum’s expansion that opened February 9, 2019 was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of the architectural firm Foster + Partners. It is the most comprehensive in the institution’s 78-year history. Dramatic changes include boldly re-orienting the main entrance to South Dixie Highway , which restores the symmetrical east-west campus axis created in 1941 by original architect Marion Sims Wyeth. The building and accompanying lush sculpture garden, enable the Norton to exhibit more art, present more programs, and provide a growing community an up-to-date center for the public to enjoy art and culture.

- JanCeePalm Beach, Florida78 contributionsFabulous Museum with ParkingThe museum is a quiet gem in a fantastic location that both avoids the Palm Beach traffic and offers fantastic amenities such as a great cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. They honor reservations in advance which makes the visit very stress free. Highly recommend the salmon entree and salads plus the special exhibits and weekend events are well worth the visitVisited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 March 2024

The staff were helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend. The restaurant was a 5 star experience for lunch. Our waiter, Nick, was so helpful, polite and attentive. The food was delicious and the service top notch!!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024
- joedigraziaBrownsville, Texas112 contributionsFine art in the middle of down town Palm Beach, Florida !!!One of the best museums I have ever been to. You will see works for art by major European artists, Ming dynasty vases, impressionist paintings, and outdoor sculptures by some more modern artists. The museum has about three floors and at the time of our visit the elevator was out of service,( hopefully, it will be repaired soon) We started on the outside first, and then we worked our way to the top. There are plenty of places to sit down and rest too. I hate museums where you have no place to sit and admire the art. We really enjoyed our visit and we would recommend it to any art lovers.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 June 2024

We ate dinner at the restaurant which was very good, took a 30 minute guided tour which was informative and listened to great music! We were impressed by many of the works of art that the museum has on display. We look forward to returning again.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 October 2024

Took a terrific docent tour and enjoyed painting a watercolor in the Open Studio with all the materials provided. The Norton Museum was an experience my 19 and 21 year old children wanted to experience while on vacation in West Palm Beach. They love immersing themselves in art from around the world and various time periods. The Norton did not disappoint. The expansive first level consisted of a wide variety of time periods like the Renaissance to world renown artist like Picasso. It is always intriguing for me to read about each painting and the meaning behind them.
All our our favorite piece collectively at the Norton and any museum to date for that matter was Purity. A white Iranian onyx sculpture by Barry X Ball. It was unlike anything we have ever seen as we stared in awe of its beauty. We each had our own second liking as well. For me it was the painting by Mark Tansey called Triumph over Mastery II. The longer I stared at it, the more I saw. It was difficult for me to walk away and I actually went back again to to take it all in one more time before leaving. The Colossal Buddha Head dating back to circa 673-705 was an intriguing artifact that also grabbed my eye especially from that era. I collect buddha heads to this was indeed a delight for me to see.
The museum consists of three floors. It took us about 2.5 hours to go through the museum but keep in mind I read about most of the pieces in there so it took me a little longer. I want to also mention that I thought it was so cool walking up to the museum to see the art in front. My kids didn't know what the art piece was so I explained it to them...guess I dated myself a little bit. I will not say what it is so you can guess if you don't know either but will post a picture.
There is a parking lot across the street where you can park all day for $5.00. Adults are $18.00 for admission and students are $5.00 (must show student ID). Healthcare, Military and first responders are free, again with ID. I forgot mind because I was on vacation and didn't think I would need it so I paid full price.
Overall it was a great museum and would highly recommend it.

I returned again to the Norton Art Museum which is worthy of extollment. It is in my favorite art museum in Florida. I saw 2 impressive temporary exhibits,"Artists in Motion:Impressionist and Modern Masterpieces From The Pearlman Collection"(it ends February 18 2024)and "Presence :The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder"(it ends March 18,2024).
The "Artists In Motion:Impressionist and Modern Masterpieces From The Pearlman Collection Exhibit"features outstanding paintings by Paul Cezanne and Chaim Soutine and splendid sculpture by Jacques Lipchitz.Paintings that especially captivated me were Paul Cezanne's"Provencal Manor",Alfred Sisley's"River View",the paradigm of quality French Impressionism,Vincent Van Gogh's"Tarascon Stagecoach",Amadeo Modigliani's"Jean Cocteau",Edgar Degas'"After The Bath",and Oskar Kokoshka's"Henry Pearlman".I also appreciated fine sculpture by Jacques Lipchitz("Marsden Hartley")and Giacomo Manzu("Oskar Kokoshka").
At the "Presence:The Photography Collection of Judy Glickman Lauder Exhibit",I appreciated fine photographs, primarily silver gelatin prints by the giants of 20th Century Photography such as; Sally Mann,Richard Avedon,Diane Arbus,Weegee,Helmut Newton, and Roman Visniac, among others.Personal favorites were Ruth Orkin's"American Girl in Italy",Roman Vishniac's"Grandfather and Grand Daugther",Nan Goldin's"Self Portrait in Kimono With Brian",color photo,Barbara Morgan's"Spring On Madison Square,New York City"(multiple print photogram, silver gelatin print)and Jerry Uelsmann's"Small Woods Where I Met Myself"(fantastic reflections).
As usual,I enjoyed the Norton Art Museum's outstanding permanent collection of 20th Century Art,including splendid paintings by Claude Monet,Pablo Picasso,Henri Matisse,Pierre Bonnard,Georgia O'Keefe,Edward Hopper, and Stuart Davis. For further information please call 561-659-6786. Currently, the Norton is normally open seven days a week.

Excellent collection of art and ancient pottery and vases. Definitely one of the best art museums in Florida and worth the visit. They also have after hours music on select evenings. Students get discounts so it makes it a value visit for bigger families.

The museum exhibits (in a beautiful, clean, and comfortable space) eclectic pieces of art (from PIcasso to Jasper Johns to Andy Warhol to Georgia O'Keefe to Chihuly's marvelous glass work), from the collections of some of the local, wealthy folks. Light fare and a beautiful gift shop are located in the museum. Ample parking for a $5 fee is conveniently located across the street from the museum.

This is another update. A few days ago,I visited the Norton Art Museum again.I have spent may wonderful hours at the Norton since I moved to Florida in 1979. The Norton Art Museum's collection of 20th Century American Art is the hallmark of excellence. However,in this review ,I will disseminate information about the excellence of the temporary "At the Dawn of New Age 20th Century Modernism"exhibit from New York City's Whitney Art Museum(it ends July 16 2023)
"At The Dawn of New Age 20th Century Modernism"exhibit,Georgia O'Keefe,Marsden Hartley,and sculptor Elie Nadelman are extremely well-represented.Favorite paintings that day were;Marsden Hartley's"Landscape,New Mexico" and "Painting Number 5",Georgia O'Keefe's"Black and White"and "Music,Pink,Blue Number 2",Oscar Bluemner's"Old Canal Port"(awesome reflections),Arnold Bloch's"Mountain"(very Expressionistic),Carl Newman's"Bathers"(fine resplendent colors),William Zorach's"Woods in Autumn",Charles Burchfield's"Night Scene With Clouds",Florine Stettheimer's"Sun",Max Weber's "Chinese Restaurant",and Yun Gee's"Street Scene"plus delightful sculptural creations by Elie Nadelman.
As usual,I enjoyed fine 20th Century American Paintings from their permanent collection by Childe Hassam,George Bellows,Walt Kuhn,Robert Henri,Milton Avery,Guy Wiggins("Flatiron Building,New York City"),Fairfield Porter,and Phillip Pearlstein,among others.
Being at the Norton Art Museum is a special experience.

This writeup is only about the physical musem and not the extensive garden grounds. The mseum definitely practices mask wearing and social distancing in capital letters. Reservations are mandatory so spcing can be enforced. The museum is on three levels with the ground floor being the largest open to the public. The collection is ecletic featuring ancient Chinese porcelines, 16th to 19th century European painters, modern American art among other items. The rooms are well laid out for specific periods with reasonable descritions of many items. I would allow two hours for an initial visit. We had very littlw interaction with the staff. The museum has an excellent websitee which you need to spend time with before visiting. It is now the largest museum in the State. All ticket prices, depending upon age, are reasonable.

Not handicap friendly. Too few handicap spots with empty reserved spots. Drop off too far from entrance. Bathroom doors too heavy - need to be automated. Need one way traffic flow in exhibits and staff needs to enforce 6’ social distancing. Need chairs preferably with arms that seniors can sit in and stand up - not those useless low benches anyone over 50 cannot rise from. Very difficult for someone using a walker and some doorways too narrow for wheelchair. Beautiful but inaccessible building.

Definitively one of the best museums in Florida. Some works are extraordinary and some you wonder how in the world they were bought. Thought the museum tour would highlight the best pieces but it was just centered on a few pictures, and it was audience conversational and very uninteresting. Fridays are especially good days to visit.

First time visitor while on a trip to West Palm Beach where I stopped for a visit. The museum's European and American painting collection which includes some Impressionist and American Realist paintings were very nice. I've been to some of the art museums in state of Florida and this is one of the better ones. It's small in size in comparison to museums in northeast, but I still enjoyed the offerings and the visit.

Today we visited the museum to see the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibit, which was amazing! The museum is clean and they are taking excellent steps to ensure everyone is being careful to avoid over crowding. We brought ourproof of vaccination along with our photo identification and tickets, which was checked before we entered the museum. The museum has so many various artists exhibits, including statues and photos ranging from Manet to Picasso and more. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful and the statues and figurines outside are both whimsical and beautiful. Also, the gift shop is really nice and they have some unusual items. Julian was very helpful and extremely helpful!

Howleys 50 style diner is close by, good food in an interesting setting. City Place is good, or you could drive 15 minutes south to Lake Worth, an interesting artsy city with lots of good restaurants. Dave's Last Resort is a good option. Drive south on US 1, have lunch or dinner then head over the bridge to take A1A, beach road, back to West Palm. Beautiful drive. LW has a hunderd year old downtown Old Florida vibe. City Place is more upscale.
