About
Ca' d'Zan is a venue of The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Visit ringling.org to purchase a tour. The home of the circus king and his wife, a couple from humble mid-western origins, Ca’ d’Zan stands as a testament to the American Dream of the Roaring Twenties. Inspired by the Venetian Gothic style of the palazzos that ring the Venice canals, this dazzling palatial mansion perfectly captures the splendor and romance of the Italy the Ringlings so loved. My wife and I are members of The Ringling and truly believe the membership is a fabulous bargain.

Today we were lucky to have some very good weather and since we were bringing family to view the circus museum, decided we should visit the mansion as well so our family could get double the pleasure that time allowed for. There are three different tours, the unguided first floor only tour which is part of your museum pass, the longer additional cost guided tour which includes the second floor and lastly the Ca’ d’Zan Experience Tour, including remaining floors and access to the Tower.

I’ve reviewed the mansion previously. Its aesthetics are quite appealing. The house has large windows throughout which allows for great lighting from the sun as well as beautifully crafted window displays. Take a little extra time in all of the rooms to observe the craftsmanship especially ceilings, but in the main gathering room allow extra time to view not just the the wooden beamed ceiling including stained glass skylights, but the paintings on the ceiling as well.

The exterior of the mansion is fascinating for its view of distant Longboat Key, the water, the colored tile, but also the visions of long ago social events on the beautiful Piazza.

If you like the TV series “The Guilded Age” or The Downton Abbey Series and movies, you’ll enjoy a peek at this architectural gem as well. There is free downloadable audio you can use with the unguided tour. Just ask a Museum employee for assistance with the download. They are more than happy to help.

As a last note, not to be nit-picky, snooty, or biased but wanting to add context to a few previous reviews. This isn’t Newport, RI, New York, The Hearst Castle, Versailles or any of the great palaces of Europe. This is Sarasota Florida which wasn’t even incorporated into a town until 1902. And, unlike Newport, this wasn’t a playground for the rich and famous from the wealth center of the country, New York. Nor was it located equidistant between the large population centers of San Francisco and Los Angelas as the Hearst Castle, home to a very wealthy and connected American.

Ca’d’zan was constructed for a couple who were very wealthy but who weren’t connected in location to a large population of movers and shakers and wealthy individuals. In other words, the Ringling mansion was just the right size for the population of visitors the couple would be entertaining. I agree it is not Newport in scale and I too believe the Ballroom seems quite small. But, again, the mansion is exquisite and it is sized properly for what Mable and John decided fit their needs.

It’s a great place to visit and I recommend, if you can, visiting in early spring or late fall to avoid the harsh summer weather.

Ca’ d’Zan is a look into the past of one of the richest men in the United States and his wife at the time it was built. Overlooking Sarasota Bay, one can imagine being a guest at this tropical mansion during its heyday.

Unfortunately, the normal tour only gives you access to the first floor. But from that, you can see how John and Mabel Ringling’s travel to Europe, mainly Italy, inspired the design. The exterior is Italian Moorish which is highly evident in the windows. There is a great deal of craftsmanship which is due to the Ringling’s hiring master old world craftsmen from Europe. The other impressive feature of the mansion is the art. The Ringling’s amassed a spectacular collection of artwork, again from their European travels. While the majority is in the museum, there are still enough examples adorning the mansion. The mansion is quite small compared to the American palaces of Newport, RI, but well worth a visit. And there is no need to rush while on this tour. I recommend taking your time, especially while visiting the interior.

Inside, the highlight for me was the main gathering area with its huge fireplace, expansive ceiling, and windowed wall facing the water. Outside, my wife was stunned at the grandeur and expanse of the back patio. To me it was reminiscent of the party scenes in the 2013 version of the movie “The Great Gatsby.” One can easily imagine the major parties taking place on the grounds making use of this area.

There is another tour allowing access to the upper floors and the tower. Check with the Museum for dates. The best way to experience all of the splendors of “The Ringling” is through a membership which is very affordable for all of the access it gives you.

We liked walking past the banyan grove to reach the farthest point of the Ringling property. This home was the personal residence of the Ringlings… “ house of John” in the Venetian dialect. Enjoy the exterior of the home for the site and views and breeze from the bay. The tile work along the waterfront is exceptional too. See the opulent and ornate furnishings, most from Italy, which reflect a lavish lifestyle from the previous century before the GreatDepression. A separate ticket is required for the house, and this ticket provides admission to the first floor and exterior only. We wandered thru on our own, and relied on the very knowledgeable docents stationed inside to answer our questions. The pastel colored glass panes of the windows on the water side on a bright day are very lovely. The home is not a museum, and does not appear to be fully labeled, furnished, accessorized or decorated. The pipe organ was out for long term repair. The boat that was docked out back is long gone, interesting story there too. Not a venue for kids. John Ringling had no heirs. After 10 years of probate, the property, and responsibility for its maintenance, were given to the state of Florida, FSU, and Public and private donors keep it going.

My aunt has long wanted to tour this home, so we drove down from Dunedin to see it while I was visiting her from Washington. Only the 1st floor of the house is available to see right now & you can’t buy a ticket for just the house, so the $25 for the museums that we weren’t really interested in & didn’t have time for plus the extra $10 we had to add on just to get into the house is a bit steep. Parking is free across the street from the entrance. It’s a fairly long walk from the entrance of the visitor center to the home at the back of the property, so something to be aware of if your group includes elderly or folks that have difficulty walking a distance. There’s a docent outside the home to direct you into the side entrance of the house & another docent there will direct you to the signage with a QR code to scan to access a map of the property & an audio guide for a recorded tour of the house. They ask you to use headphones, but we didn’t have any, as I’m sure most folks won’t. It wasn’t crowded the Tuesday afternoon we were there, so we listened with our phones held to our ears, but a couple others touring ahead of us had their phone’s volume up rather loud so if it was crowded with a lot of people doing the same, it would be hard to hear & focus on your own audio tour. The architecture is ornate with beautiful ceilings & a lovely view of the bay out the back of the house. Since only the 1st floor is open right now, it took less than an hour to view, even with listening to the entire audio tour recording. More time could be allotted to meandering the well kept grounds. We walked through the small rose garden on the way back to the visitor center & had planned to eat lunch in the cafe, but it was a longer wait than we were prepared for. Make meal reservations ahead of time if you think you’ll want to eat there as the 2nd floor coffee shop had few options - a couple clam shell salads, yogurts & cheese sticks to purchase.

The House tour is NOT included with admission to The Ringling Museum so be sure to add on the first floor tour so you don't miss this absolutely stunning place! I was so amazed at not only the architecture but the elaborate decor. It is truly a beautiful house and everyone who visits the museum should visit the house at least once. Don't forget to go outside to the back of the house for amazing views of the water and a beautiful view of the house as well.

They have an amazing collection of circus memorabilia. Lots of fun activities for the kids. There is a great view and a beautiful rose garden. The collection of art was impressive and it was great to just spend time leisurely strolling the grounds. We loved our food at the restaurant especially the key lime pie.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the excesses of the Hurst Castle in California. In other words, it’s another one of these carefully constructed fantasy escape homes for a member of the societal elite of the late nineteenth, early twentieth century. And I thirsted to see the opulent interior. It was oddly cavernous and devoid of paintings, sculptures, and overall devoid of the kind of density of loot that you normally find in one of the Newport mansions or Biltmore. In an odd way, it was kind of creepy. Here you will find a somewhat empty old musty house with a few pieces of scattered furniture reposing in large rooms. The walls, marble floors, and edifices of this place are indeed opulent. But that’s about it. I also found the workers there somewhat terse. The basic self-guided admission that I got did not permit access to the upstairs living quarters. I recommend you ask the admissions people how to get upstairs access. I felt this was underwhelming, and to be perfectly honest, I felt kind of ripped-off. Go if you absolutely must fulfill your curiosity and check this off your bucket list, but be forewarned.

The Cà d'Zan is a must see if you are in the Sarasota area. It’s an architectural wonder where no expense was spared.

We opted for the private tour so we could see the entire home. For a family of 4, this is quite pricey. Most folks will not opt for this. We chose to, since it’s a part of family history.

It will be one of the most interesting homes tours you could take, especially due to the grandeur of the build for the circus magnate.

The property also has an art museum, circus museum, ample vegetation (many exotic), and even a Starbucks.

It’s amazing to see the what was accomplished in the emerging city of Sarasota in the early 1900s. Sarasota and the surrounding barrier islands have a rich history of art and architecture, likely stemming from this project and those involved in it.

If the back patio or windows look familiar, that is because this was the home of Miss Havisham in the 1998 film Great Expectations.

We did the 1st floor self guided Ca’D’Zan home tour with museums included.
The house, overlooking the bay, is incredible & looked like it was a special place to live. Even though it was large it still felt like it had a comfortable ‘homey’ feel to it. The grounds were really nice too with a number of gardens including large Banyan trees that were especially cool.
Would’ve been nice to find out more if there were ever any animals living on the grounds back when the circus wintered in Sarasota & what that was like.
Circus museums were nice. Ringling’s personal train car & detailed miniature circus model were really neat to see.
The art museum contained a large collection of Flemish paintings. Not our cup of tea, but if you like that kinda stuff…they got a lot of it !

This is a must do on your visit to the area. If you only visit the grounds ($5 admission, or free on Mondays) you'll enjoy the trip. The art museum is amazing and the circus museum is very interesting. The best are the banyon trees and the view of Sarasota bay from the home that John Ringling built.
