We already miss our daily walks along south Straub park all the way to the bridge at Snell Isle.

On several occasions we made it to the Manatee hangout, and also to the Vinoy golf club.

Also, an enjoyable bike ride.

This park is right by the water and has wonderful pathways through luscious vegetation and plenty of benches for seating along the way. Definition worth a visit.

Construction - Demolition - Reconstruction

In March, while staying just to the north of South Straub Park, I walked past the northern area, North Straub Park, past the Museum of Fine Arts, which separates the North and South portions of Straub Park. On this visit, they were not at all alike, as much of South Straub Park was closed. There was quite a bit of demolition going on, but then also some reconstruction, and construction of the barriers forming the track for the Tampa/St Petersburg Grand Prix, coming up.

South Straub Park is located between Bayshore Dr NE with the North Yacht Basin and Tampa Bay to the east and Beach Dr NE, with hotels, restaurants, bars and art galleries to the west. It starts at the Museum of Fine Arts, and ends at St. Petersburg Yacht Club. However, looking past the fencing, the barricades and the equipment, it was obvious that within, there was a lovely park, but it was closed off, and a “hard hat area.” Still, I was able to walk along it, on both the Bayshore Dr and Beach Dr sides, and with some pedestrian detours, around the lower end, by the Yacht Club.

Besides the setting up for the Grand Prix, I could not tell what the other construction, within the Park was about, but hope to explore South Straub Park much more completely, on a return visit, as what I could see, was as lovely as its northern counterpart. I was just visiting too early - much too early.

A waterside park well maintained with an incredible life size nativity scene. Pity there was wise men but no shepherds.

We go here often. Straub Park is on the bay and there are always birds around as well as people walking, bicycling and dogs. Sunrise is a perfect time to take a brisk morning walk. On your walk you will also see volleyball players and usually yoga groups. There is a small area with some exercise equipment as well. The last few weeks we have also seen the large migratory white pelicans.

Just across the street from the marina and the next block south of the St. Petersburg Museum of Modern Art. A nice little spot to scan the city and sit by the fountain.

This is a park designed for you to stroll through and perhaps sit a while. There are no park-specific activities such as playgrounds or picnic tables.

This small park is the southern of two Straub parks and currently feels a bit isolated due to all the construction work taking place around the pier - no doubt it’ll be a much more vibrant place when work is finished. It’s opposite Central Yacht Basin and across from the interesting museum of history - North section of the park is located on the other side of Fine Arts museum and both sections were probably joined together back in the day? Straub was editor of the local paper between 1901 - 39 and did a lot to promote the bayside area. Street parking is available alongside for $1ph/max 3hrs and public restrooms are located on corner of Bayshore Drive.

It is difficult to separate North Straub Park, South Straub Park and Albert Whitted Park as they all run into each other, creating an enjoyable green walkway along the waterfront, running from the Vinoy Renaissance hotel, past the Museum of Arts to the Dali Museum and Marina. An enjoyable place to stroll, run or sit, it makes St Petersburg a city to walk rather than to drive in a car and provides great views back to the city.

The pier is undergoing redevelopment and I look forward to seeing this once it is complete.
