    Real nature in the city
What a find! Wonderful place for a stroll and wildlife watching. We came at dusk and saw a lot of birds and alligators. Several of the trees were impressive also. Would recommend bringing bug spray and binoculars. There are several cages for raptors and we got to see feeding time. Talked to several of the workers about what they do, education etc. Whenever we visit another state, we try to find a place like this, where one can see what the area looked like before human “improvements”. Two notes - the parkland is controlled through a nature center, so you can’t stroll through it unless the center is open. Also, the gators are large. If you have either young kids who won’t stay close by or older ones with poor judgement, don’t go along the nature walk. It could turn out badly.

A mosaic of natural habitats and wild tropical landscapes
Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is a 245-acre protected area located on the south side of St. Petersburg, Florida, at 1101 Country Club Way South, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Once the home of a zoo and botanical garden, it has evolved over the decades into a mosaic of natural habitats and wild tropical landscapes. From the outer Main Trail, there are more than three miles of five side trails or loops that showcase specific habitats through a variety of ecosystems--the Swamp Woodlands Trail, the Willow Marsh Trail, the Lake Maggiore Trail, the Scrub Island Trail and the Pine Flatwoods Trail. Enjoy the amusing giant armadillos along the Wax Myrtle Pond. In addition, there is a playground for children, picnic areas for the entire family, a paved bicycle path that makes a loop through the park, a wild bird aviary and many metal statues built by the late Paul Eppling, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg. From a grassy island on Lake Maggiore, you can see downtown St. Petersburg. But, don't worry, it is unlikely that you'll confront any alligators.

Wonderful walking trails and beautiful birds of prey
Admission is refreshingly free and there is a lot to do here if you like exploring walking trails. An unexpected bonus was the aviary with birds of prey exhibited. A great way to spend a couple hours on a nice afternoon.

    Camped
My husband and I actually living like vagabonds w a tent and a mini van wandering around w no responsibilities!!!! (Off work one week) So we decided to stay here and camp for the night due to its proximity to some area attractions we wanted to visit. The camp ground was well maintained and very inexpensive. And the bath houses were so CLEAN!!!! Would stay again!

    Beautiful afternoon tram tour
Great tram tour of the Boyd Hill Preserve. Very knowledgeable guide who pointed out turtle nesting places, native plants, nesting places, on the scenic route. History of the park was also included. There are hiking trails and a very nice gift shop too. I will be back to to walk the trails!

Typically nature trails in this general area don’t have an entrance fee - so we were surprised when we were charged $3 each to enter. The staff weren’t that helpful - mostly just talking amongst themselves. We decided to walk the Main trail which was noted on the map to be .82 miles anda circular trail. There was a problem in that trail so we needed to turn around to get to the exit. For portions of the trail we were just walking on a dirt road. Not the most scenic.

We went for a fabulous hike here with some local friends. We saw so much wildlife - lots of different birds including an owl in the tree above us, a raccoon came right by and we found an alligator in our path! It was incredible. Loved it.

On vacation in Treasure Island near St. Petersburg, Florida, we visited several parks in the area, but this one was so peaceful and uncrowded.
For a modest entry fee, we were able to go around the paths (I use a mobility scooter) and see the wildlife. There were lots of birds, lizards and we spotted a gopher turtle burrowing into the ground.
Around the park are a number of seats where a rest can be taken and there were also cool water dispensers- very important in a Florida summer.
A GPS is almost essential to find the place, but there is plenty of free parking and a small shop. We liked it very much.

I love walking through Boyd Hill and seeing so much nature. Hares, alligators, Pileated Woodpeckers, Barred Owls. You never know what you're going to see there.
