Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

We walked in as far as the lobby which is as far as you can go without being a student or in a tour. The place is beautiful and next time will sign up for the tour. We left wanting to see more.

Gorgeous campus! If I was 17 again, I would definitely like to attend Flagler College. I moved from NY to MIA about 6 years ago, and this trip to St. Augustine made me realize and understand the importance of the Flagler name in Florida. Definitely...More

One hour tour of the courtyard, lobby, dining hall and (formerly) women’s’ salon. Appreciating the fine architecture with Celtic cross, nautical and Spanish motifs. Once Flagler’s Ponce de Leon hotel, this was a premier destination for winter vacations for the rich and titled. In the...More

Such a beautiful building inside and out. Nice just to take a seat in the courtyard. We did not do the tour but I'm sure it would have been interesting.

We had a great tour guide, a tall, blonde male who is a current student of Flagler College (sorry, forget the name). He was a perfect blend of history, interesting and amusing stories and off to the side, he even told us a few ghost...More

An unbelievable structure both inside and out. Take the tour and prepare for sensual overload, with ornate paintings, carvings, tiffany glass windows, one-of-a-kind architecture everywhere you look. The original ladies sitting room and the student dining room are particularly memorable.
