Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

The architecture in St Augustine is beautiful and is evident at Flagler College which used to be a hotel. I highly recommend going on the 1 hour tour which is very reasonably priced. While I was there the tour was offered at 10:00 and 2:00. The tour was very informative and will allow you access to rooms you could not... More

While in St. Augustine you need to walk the grounds of Flagler College. The architecture, flora and layout is a great place to just sit and relax. A must see while in the lovely town of St. Augustine, FL.

This really is a must-do for anyone visiting St. Augustine. Henry Flagler was John Rockefeller’s partner at Standard Oil and money was no object. What is now Flagler College was originally a spa/hotel for Flagler’s wealthy friends to use when they travelled down the east coast via his railroad from NY to St. Augustine. And Flagler spared no expense in... More

I did not take the tour because I didn't have a lot of time here, but I did walk around the college campus. It was so beautiful and I really enjoyed the building and the nature surrounding the college. I wish I could have spent more time looking around.

We were charged $8.00 senior rate for the hour and fifteen minute tour of the 1888 Ponce de Leon Hotel which is now used as the cafeteria for Flagler University. Our group was rather large because of spring breakers so it was divided in half to make the tour more personal. The student, a tall, young woman in her junior... More

Tours given by students of this beautiful college. So many interesting facts about it's architecture, Flagler, and the running of the hotel when it was in its prime. Still has so many original features. Tour guide was fascinating and charming.

No trip to St. Augustine will be complete without taking time to tour Flagler College. The former Ponce de Leon Hotel is truly a masterpiece. The college has the largest collection of Tiffany stained glass windows in the US. The hotel was built in two years in the late 1800s & one truly can't fathom how. This architectural wonder is... The old hotel is such an incredible building inside and out. The detail is amazing! The tours are led by students so you get to learn not only the history of the hotel but also their unique perspective of what it's like to go to class and live in such a grand building. The tour allows you to see the... More

The former Ponce de Leon hotel is amazing. If you like seeing how the rich lived around the turn of the century (think Titanic era), this is the tour for you. The Tiffany stained glass and chandeliers are worth it alone. Less well known but equally interesting, though, are the Thomas Edison lights and clocks. The tours are led by... More
