Flagler College's historic campus is located just four miles from the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of St. Augustine, Fla., the “nation’s oldest city.”The college is named for Henry Morrison Flagler, a Gilded Age industrialist, railroad pioneer and partner with John D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil. In 1888, Flagler built the Hotel Ponce de Leon, his first in a series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast. A masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and the first major poured-in-place concrete building in the United States is now known as Ponce de Leon Hall. This National Historic Landmark serves as the centerpiece for the Flagler College. The grand hotel launched the careers of young architects John Carrere and Thomas Hastings who are noted most for the New York Public Library and the House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights, making the Ponce one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. Louis Comfort Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass and mosaics. Murals were completed by George Willoughby Maynard and Virgilio Tojetti. The hotel was gifted to Flagler College when the institution was founded in 1968. Since then, the college has spent more than $43 million dollars restoring the historic campus and adding new buildings.

This place is breathtaking, and would say it's a must see in St Augustine. Our tour guide was a soon-to-graduate student and had infectious enthusiasm for the building and history. Don't miss the Flagler College tour.

We have enjoyed visiting the remnants of Henry Flagler's empire scattered throughout Florida and visiting Flagler College was the last place on our list. The architectural adornments of this building are quite stunning. Henry Flagler spared no expense and the quality of the construction is evident everywhere you look. He literally spent a fortune building his hotels, and they look... More

The bed and breakfast we stayed at was located right behind the college so we walked through the campus every day to get to downtown. Makes me wish I attended a small college instead of one with 30,000 students.

Nice building and grounds if you're into architecture. Make sure you go inside as well. The dome and wood carvings are beautiful. Although they offer tours, we were there late at night so they were not available.

You must take the tour at Flagler College to get to know the history behind this wonderful building. Please call them for tour hours as you cannot simply walk in.
