(At 1pm). Will never go back.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2023
- K SBoynton Beach, Florida18 contributionsOld City history with homeless everywhereWhile the restaurant and the history were great to experience, the plight of the homeless was evident everywhere. St. George street and near by park had homeless sleeping everywhere and panhandling. Unfortunately, for a city that is making money on tourism, you think they could help the homeless in their own city. The smell of body order and urine at some corners was pretty pungent. Other cities, such as Cocoa Beach provide showers and laundry facilities once a month for the homeless. For a college town, it is pretty concerning in the evenings.Visited April 2023Written 27 April 2023
- wiffeeHarrisonville, Missouri284 contributionsNations oldest shopping districtInteresting half-day activity walking among centuries-old buildings. Better appreciated if a person has some historical context. Ancient city gate to the north (so small by today's standards). Lots of shops, restaurants/bars in historic buildings (recommend the specialty popsicles!) It's worth an investigation.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2023
- Nunya B1 contributionLots of homeless, but didnt effect my visitThis is not our first and certainly not our last visit. Im now 48 and have been here many times from the time I turned 14. However, the homeless problem was very obvious and definitely changed the aesthetic, but we had no problems from it. I feel as though the negative reviews are as all negative reviews are, from people that just like to bitch and you cant make happy. I love St. Augustine, its beautiful and I love just being there.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 July 2023

Serious homeless problem that the city ignores/ leaves unchecked. Sleeping in streets some aggressively begging if they are not passed out in broad daylight. I see cops but they are not enforcing vagrancy laws and clearing them out of what is the tourist core of the city. When I go to Naples Florida I have never seen a single one as they clearly don't tolerate it. Not returning to St Augustine until they decide clean the old city up.

You cannot visit St Augustine without walking around the old town and admiring the architecture. Some really beautiful sites.
I know some of the recent reviews mention the homeless but we weren’t disturbed by them at all and it certainly didn’t detract from our visit.
St Augustine is definitely on our list of places to return to if we are over this way again.

Just be aware, the amount of homeless people in the historic district is surprising and a horrible look for this area. They are sleeping between the shops and everywhere. It's something visitors need to know and be prepared to see in the 'hyped up historic district "

It’s a beautiful place with lots to see. Gorgeous architecture and so much history. However, there were people sleeping on restaurant benches, outside of restaurants, alleys, everywhere. I was very uncomfortable with my children which is ashame because it’s a beautiful, fun place. I would not go at night. While I would love to go again I’m not sure I’ll be going anytime soon because of the loitering.

Are most shops in the Old City area open in the evenings or do they close around 5-6 PM?

We were parked at the hotel, and took the trolley service to get there.
What are the beaches like, compared to, lets say South Beach in Miami? Can you swim in the ocean or it is more adequate for surfing?

Really nice clean beaches not commercialized. The weather is great for swimming. I don't surf so I don't know about that.

Of course! Best without a tour so you can wander around and explore at your own pace.
Is there rv parking anywhere?

Yes. There is an oversized lot between the large public parking complex downtown and Ponce de Leon Blvd.

The last time we visited, the parking was awful. How is it now? Where is the best place to park for the Colonial Quarter and Castillo de San Marcos?

I agree Parking is a problem. I parked at our hotel which was near a trolley stop and that eliminate the problem. The green trolley has a free parking lot (if you buy a ticket) along US1, De Leon Dr, just south of route 16. Probably your best bet.
