Take a step back in time as you enter this Grand Gilded Age home, built by Franklin W. Smith in 1883. Franklin Smith, an eclectic world traveler, was originally from Boston, and he built the Villa Zorayda as his winter home in St. Augustine, FL. Smith was the innovator of poured concrete and crushed coquina construction that is seen throughout St. Augustine today. On the "National Register of Historic Places", the Villa Zorayda is a 1/10th scale reproduction of a portion of the Moorish Castle, the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. View the elegant traceries on the walls made of alabaster and plaster which were made in Spain using the same molds that the Moors used for the walls of the Alhambra Palace! In addition to the magnificent architecture of the building is the original art and antique collection: hand pierced brass lamps, hand carved and exquisite inlaid furniture, an Egyptian rug over 2400 years old, and much more! You will also see beautiful hand painted Spanish & Egyptian tiles, Moorish horseshoe arches, and the beautiful architectural details from the Alhambra Palace. Learn the 133 year history of the Villa Zorayda as you take a state-of-the-art audio guided tour, which run continuously throughout the day. The audio guided tour is available in English, Spanish and French. Free parking while visiting the Museum.

I loved this house - turned private museum. It is a tribute to the Victorian age of collectibles - with even a small but interesting Egypt room. However, the architecture is the star - but I will confess that I have plans to see the real Alhambra in Spain, so that was my motivation for coming here. The tour is... More

We had a wonderful time on the self guided tour of the Villa. The architecture was incredible and the handmade carvings and ornate inlaid furniture was absolutely incredible. The different themed rooms and the couple of centuries of artwork and handmade furniture was unreal at the detail. We thoroughly enjoyed it and the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

This place is beautiful and it shows the Moroccan influence in the city. Most important, this piece of art brought a huge architectonic discovery used widely through the developing town. It also contains a mummy's foot!

I found this place to be so interesting and beautiful. I loved all the fascinating furniture, artwork, rugs, lamps, etc. There are place cards explaining what everything is and where it came from. There is also an audio tour that goes with your ticket price. You hit the number on the device to listen to facts about the rooms and... More

This was an interesting museum with incredible collections of furniture and artwork from Various parts of Europe. The Egyptian room is especially interesting with the cat rug, and the variety of objects makes this an interesting way to spend an hour or two. The audio recording explains the highlights in a straightforward way.

I'm a fan of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, so it was a no-brainer to visit this imaginative 1/10 replica built as a private home in late 1800s. You get a self-guided audio tour explaining all the features. Lots of art and antiques showing America's interest in the Orient, Spain and Moorish culture. It's all mixed together, so even a... Villa Zorayda is a replica of a Spanish palace with a large Moorish influence. They had many reproductions and few genuine articles. We toured 2 floors. The rooms were small and cramped, with no apparent theme in each room. It seems as if things were just placed anywhere. Maybe the candlelight tour would be more interesting vs the self-guided audio... More

We are so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit of the Villa Zorayda Museum. The Villa Zorayda was originally built as a private residence in 1883, but it has changed use multiple times over the years and ultimately became a museum in the 1930s. Although the building is no longer set up as a home, 50%... More

WE went to St. Augustine early just to visit the museum for the candlelight tour. Unknown to us we were gonna to be escorted by living relatives of the owners. Talk about first hand information!!
