Port St. Lucie is a booming Florida community with many new housing developments , waterways, parks, preserves, shops ,restaurants and the list goes on. This is a new "Hot Spot' for retirees moving to Florida and current residents of Palm Beach, and Broward County seeking a more relaxed and less costly lifestyle. Just a little over an hour North of Boca Raton new housing is less than half the cost with many of the same amenities, New malls, restaurants, shopping and lovely sightseeing abound. The Botanical Gardens are one of numerous nature preserves in the area with an admission donation of $5 suggested. Just 20 minutes from Stuart Fl. a good place to base for a Treasure Coast trip of several days. Near by beaches and great walking trails add to the appeal of this area for a visit or setting up residency. Although Port St. Lucie has no "Downtown" in the traditional sense many malls and nearby Stuart provide all the needs of an urban location.

This is a hidden gem. For a recommended donation of $5.00, we enjoyed an hour of easy walking through a shady, cool garden, highlighting many types of Florida friendly plants. There were water features, garden benches, and garden store with plants for purchase, and a cute gift shop staffed by sweet volunteers. Some of their products are locally made. (I purchased a birdhouse). I would come again, maybe in a month other than January when there might be more blooms in season. This is also a pet friendly destination.

The St Lucie Botanical Gardens have had a lot of work done over the last few years with new paths, trees, [plants and exhibition areas. Parking was increased dramatically. On Wednesday evenings you can hear live jazz in the Gardens. A great botanical experience.

We needed a place to spend an hour or so before a baseball game, and I’m so glad we stopped here. The garden is pathed with mulch and walkways. It is small, but has beautiful tropical treats like an orchid garden, hibiscus and bromeliad areas, and succulents. A wide assortment of flowers and plants native to Florida were blooming in March. There is a plant sale area where some tropical plants propagated from the garden are offered for sale. We even saw a little alligator in the pond. There is no charge for entry, donations are accepted.

The Botanical Gardens are very nice, and have different areas with different types of plant life. Make sure to get a brochure before you start walking.
We saw giant multi-colored lizards that we've never seen before, all over the place. We wish there had been more butterflies but I guess it depends on the day.
Make sure to check out the Fairy Garden (not well marked), and you have to search up in the trees to see them - I think there are 4 or 5.
The main building and gift shop are only open certain hours, but the gardens are always open (as far as we could tell).

Went to the gardens to get some exercise during quarantine. There was only one other visitor during the time we were there. We felt very safe. It was nice to have the place to orselves. It would be a lovely outing any day. Lots of fresh air. You can see butterflies zipping around. You'll see lizards of all kinds. Ponds and fountain are small but green and lush. Fish were jumping like crazy. There is a nature/board walk under construction as well. The main office and what appears to be historic homes were closed when we visited. We saw picnic tables, benches, and a very rustic garden shop. But do beware of the alligator if you have little ones.

There are ten different gardens beautifully laid out for a pleasant stroll. My favorite was the orchids because many were in bloom. though there was something blooming in every garden.
there is also a section with plants for sale at reasonable prices. If i lived there that’s there i would buy my plants.
Inside there is a lively gift shop too.
The best part is it’s free and run solely by donations and by volunteers. There is a jar at the front to donate but no pressure to do so.
There is also a scavenger hunt for children.

With no admission fee (a donation is suggested, and deserved), this is am economical way to spend an hour or so. Somewhat small, the grounds are nonetheless beautiful and packed with eye-catching gardens and relaxing spaces. Part of the facility was closed for a private event the day of my visit- hopefully it's open next time I'm in the area (and the skies have some more sun).

It is like a short walk in a park with attractive plant settings. You probably will be tempted to take pictures. There are plants for sale and you feel reassured that they will be sturdy. The gift shop is pretty and has unusual things to see. A short visit but worth the stop.

Well laid out, wide variety of plants, excellent signage, and friendly staff. They had a reasonably priced garden shop, got some cute little plants to take home. There is no entrance fee but a $5 / person donation is recommended. They gave out pencils, magnifying glasses, and activity sheets to kids, kept my son engaged while we were there!

Do they sell plants that would survive winter in NJ or are they only for the local climate?
Written 22 October 2016
I really don't know. They were having a plant sale but since we had flown I didn't bother to look. I did as that they had perennials so I imagine many would be ok.
I'm not sure how often they have that sale.
