A variety of scenery along this 11 mile trail. Well marked. There are several shorter options that loop back to the west end trailhead. You'll need to leave a car at both ends or add 4 miles to walk back along the road if you opt for the 11 mile trail. Looking forward to doing this trail again. Maybe add a walk around the lake near the west end of the trail.

We hiked the red loop as well as the green loop for a total of about 7 miles. The area is beautiful, however parts of the trails are in bad shape: on the backside of the red loop we had to hike through 3-4 feet tall grass and some very rough terrain. The green loop which is an Eagle Scouts project, dating back to 2010 , has not been maintained and looks like it is barely used at all. The
trail at times was barely visible and in very very bad shape, we almost did not make it through . Standing water and sections of boardwalks were helpful, however not always connecting with each other. Beautiful nature, but this trail is not suitable for the casual hiker.
On the positive side , it looks like the blue trail is back open for its entirety. We will try that some other time.

Sometimes one just needs to get away, and enjoy nature. The trails here are well kept, but somewhat poorly marked, with markers being knocked over. I did not see much wildlife, but enjoyed the peace and quiet of the trail. It put me in a happy place though.

Found this preserve on my way home from New Smyrna Beach and had to come back and check it out. What a pleasant surprise. There are several trails to choose from and I picked the red trail. It’s a 5 mile loop trail starting out with an epic footbridge through beautiful wetlands. I’ve read that there are tons of wildlife in this area and ran into an armadillo right away. At about the 1 mile mark you come to Old Sawmill Rd and that’s the trail for the next couple miles. Saw deer and wild turkey. The loop goes past a picnic area and a primitive camping area. Nicely blazed and well maintained trail. Can’t wait to come back and try the blue trail. Definitely recommended.

My husband and I did the red 6mile trail loop and the green 1 mile trail around the lake.. there is so much to say about this preserve..the first quarter mile you are actually in the forest which is ok, part of this you are walking on planks due to all the swampy water but then you come out onto a road called Old Sawmill Rd.. at first I thought it was ok and we would actually get back into a trail that was in the woods, oh no, you actually stay on this road the ENTIRE TIME! I will say during our entire walk, not hike, we saw an armadillo, a ton of wild boars and piglets, a deer, and a water snake. This trail needs A TON of maintenance... the road itself is ok, but up at the lake where the Eagle Scouts did the green trail it’s horrible... like the prior review we had to walk through a lot of tall grass, which I will say was very unnerving ... thinking about ticks, spiders and snakes... and the fact that the wild hogs are destroying the ground too... when we walked around the entire lake there was a VERY WELL MAINTAINED picnic area.. now why is this so nice and everywhere else we went was like wading through a tall grass jungle? Over all this preserve area has a ton of potential but it needs to be kept up. My husband and I did however call in a wild fire that wasn’t state maintained and those guys came out really fast to get that under control!! Just be on the lookout if you do walk this especially in the summer, be prepared for what you may have to walk into!

We did the red loop from the west entrance and part of the blue trail from the other side, 11 miles in total
Beautiful wide trails, very sunny , so lots of water needed.
Two problems:
- the red trail start is not well indicated, so we started down a service road/trail to the left of where the sign is at the parking lot, only to find out that the trail actually starts 100 yards down to the right of the sign.
- the blue trail does stop ( taped off and a sign that says there is private property ), but when we continued for a while we kept seeing the blue trail markers and no sign of private property. We did turn around ultimately . Too bad you cant do the entire loop.

Longleaf Pine Preserve has been a county park for about 10 years. It has and east and west entrances that are connected by about a 10 mile trail. It's roughly a horseshoe shaped trail with the back part of the horseshoe usually wet. I usually do one side or the other. Hiking and biking get you into typical Florida terrain. What is unique is it has become a hotspot for geocaching with over 100 geocaches in the Preserve. Not as nice as Doris Leeper Preserve, but a good place for a ride or a hike and a great place to geocache.

Right off SR 44 halfway between New Smyrna and DeLand is a beautiful nature preserve. Walking trails are wide and surrounded by tall pines and Florida scrub. No facilities.

If you don't want to walk (or ride) a very long way you can use one of the two entrances and do a half at a time. A great place to hike.
The north end can be a swamp and there are gators. We haven't seen any on the west side, but on the north side we saw a big one.
Most of the geocaches are fun, but be warned. A few of them on the west side are a real pain (hence the name).

We went for the 6 mile red loop trail. It was a nice walk but we could almost always hear the highway. The trails were well marked and maintained except for the most interesting loop around the pond. There wasn't much variety in the plant or bird life. The pond trail was the most interesting but the noisiest traffic from I-4. The pond loop also had long grass and a few broken trees blocking the path. The highlight was seeing 2 snakes sunning themselves.
