Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

We have visited Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary about 5 times over several years. It is very hard to predict what/how much wildlife you will see. Our experience today was great BUT we arrived about 9 - 9:30 AM. We would have done well to be even earlier. Birds and wildlife feed in the early morning so I think that is why... More

Loved our visit to the sanctuary. It is a beautiful environment. I love birds and my wife loves painting,so was an excellent blend of both for us. The boardwalk was crowded around 11 o'clock. And we saw very few birds. ... although the painted bunting made it worthwhile. We will return.

We visited two days and enjoyed wildlife and history. We saw large frogs, turtles, alligators, a snake, and a variety of birds and vegetation (including cypress trees much older than the US). Bring your bug spray!

This is a great walk! There is a boardwalk so you are elevated but still able to see the wildlife. It is a beautiful place. There is an entry fee.

We had an informative and entertaining tour by Keith, a chatty volunteer at the sanctuary. He told us about the various environmental characteristics of the area, and pointed out things we would have never known if we just wandered through on the boardwalk...like the fact that the moisture in a grassy area discouraged the growth of some trees, and how... Saw great wildlife! Alligators, lizards, turtles, cranes and herons, and snakes! The boardwalk through the swamp is beautiful and partially shaded. It's a great length for kids (about 2 miles) and there are good bathrooms and a gift shop. Don't worry about mosquitoes in the dry season.

We met our very knowledgeable guide in the parking lot and proceeded down the boardwalk. It was a group of twenty. We made the reservation ahead of time but a couple of folks just showed up and joined the group. The guide was very informative and we enjoyed the nature hike. That said two weeks after we visited two women... More

I would definitely return to this sanctuary. Loved seeing a variety of different birds and an alligator. There were lots of tour guides on the trails in various places that were able to answer any questions you may have. They were very knowledgeable and pointed out different animals that I did not initially see. Great opportunity to take some pictures... More
