While staying in the McAlpin.. a historic hotel on ocean blvd we decided to join the walking tour via the art deco welcome center. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide and approximately 30 people along for the tour. We were given headphones and a receiver with 50 ft range. We walked around a 3 block area and visited many buildings of note while our tour guide walked us through the decades and how the evolution of the design aesthetics came about… highly recommended. It was a very interesting tour of about 90 minutes. I never would have thought to go to the Miami Beach post office to see a great example of art deco architecture.

When I go to visit a city, I like to get to know the history of the place I am visiting . This was my first time in Miami Beach, Florida. I love the Art Deco buildings, the beach ⛱️ and the food. This place is not very big, but it provided me with some good information on the area. It also had a radio exhibit, it was cool to see the old radios. There is a gift shop that has normal souvenirs, but they have a great collection of posters and pictures of the Art Deco Era. It is located right near the beach and has lots of trees for shade.

We called ahead to reserve the Mediterranean Tour because it isn't regularly scheduled. Howard was so enjoyable and knowledgeable about the area. He gave us much more background than just info on the Mediterranean buildings. We totally enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Howard! Robin (at the museum/welcome desk) was also a great resource. The whole experience, from the people, to the tour, to the museum - a complete pleasure!

Years ago we did this same tour but it is hard to believe that it has gotten better! We arrived at the Welcome Center in time to visit the small museum inside to get the lay of the land. It provided a great introduction to the time frame and the area to be covered. All were given headsets and set out with our tour guide , Howard. He gave us a brief explanation of the the area its history and we set out together a group of about 20 people from all over the country and the world. The effort in the 70s led by Barbara Capitman, artist and preservationist is the reason for the uniqueness of the area being preserved for all to enjoy. Howard had visuals to help explain his narrative. His involvement and love of the South Beach Deco buildings comes across loud and clear. Howard gave historical information and made made contrasts and comparisons of the the design of the buildings as well as progression over time. Howard gave interesting explanations of the architectural designs that brought the buildings to life. A few interiors were visited as well. These two retired school teachers relished his presentation of information and answers to all questions. I believe that nobody but the Preservation Society can give such an informational, thorough and honest accounting of the Art Deco buildings. Nothing was stopping Howard! A must do!

The Art Deco Welcome Center, also known as the Miami Beach Architectural District or Old Miami Beach Historic District or Miami Art Deco District, contains the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, an umbrella term covering a range of styles such as "Streamline" or "Tropical" or "Med-deco" that were built mostly between the Great Depression and the early 1940s. Located at 1001 Ocean Drive in Miami Beach's South Beach neighborhood, the area is best known as the district where Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace lived and was assassinated in a mansion on Ocean Drive in 1997. The district is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Sixth Street to the south, Alton Road to the west an the Collins Canal and Dade Boulevard to the north. It contains 960 historic buildings and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It includes areas of seasonal hotels, commercial strips and residential areas. Hotels on Ocean Drive, which face the ocean, run from 5th to 15th Streets and front onto Lummus Park, including the Victor (1937), the Tides (1936), the Carlyle (1941), the Cardoza (1939), the Netherlands (1935), the Winterhaven (1939) and the Amsterdam Palace (1930), which is one of the best examples of the Mediterranean Revival Style to be seen on Miami Beach. It is built around a central courtyard and was designed as a replica of Christopher Columbus' home in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

The best part of this museum is that on the way to and from it, you can see endless examples of Art Deco! There was a nifty gift shop as well.

Great books about the history of most of the buildings. It was exciting to find a book with a photo of our hotel on the cover. Jewelry was also reasonly priced.

If you have any interest in architecture whatsoever, do visit the Art Deco Tourist Centre and do take the walking tour. We had Julie as our guide and she was simply brilliant- good fun and extremely knowledgeable. You should not leave Miami without talking the tour and getting an appreciation of this extraordinary collection of Art Deco buildings. A highlight of our trip to Florida.
