Spirit Snorkeling of Marathon – providing daily snorkel trips to Sombrero...

Spirit Snorkeling of Marathon – providing daily snorkel trips to Sombrero Reef & Pirate’s Cove. Specializing in families and first time snorkelers, our friendly crew will take you on a fun filled adventure to the either the Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctuary and Lighthouse or to our special location on the Florida Bay—Pirate’s Cove. Sombrero Reef is the third largest barrier reef in the world and this beautiful 30 acre coral reef ranges from 2–30 feet deep with thousands of tropical fish. The Sombrero Lighthouse was built before the Civil War and today still helps mariners navigate the Keys with its light. Coral Reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on earth. They are second only to the tropical rain forests in the number of species they harbor, and indeed are sometimes called “The Rain Forests of the Sea”. You haven’t really seen the Keys until you’ve seen our under water areas. If the weather is too rough to go out to Sombrero Reef our dedicated crew will take you over to Pirate’s Cove, where the water is generally much calmer. Here you will see many species of tropical fish, under water plant life, lobsters and even sea horses. The water is quite shallow, making it a perfect spot to snorkel. Even sightseers enjoy our trips as many species can be seen from the boat. We take no scuba divers, we only go to shallow water snorkeling locations and Back Water Eco tours.

No visibility, waves crashing into reef along with inexperienced snorkelers. Captain needs to call trip so as not to endanger reef.

The staff was fantastic. Kim the Dive Master was very helpful and experienced. She made sure we were comfortable and provided training for us first timers. Captain Ray provided all of the necessary instructions and made sure we were all safe on the boat. Captain provided a interesting history of the reef's free standing iron tower. The reef was amazing,... More

The crew was great and this review is just based on that part of it. The actual snorkeling wasn't the best due to cloudy waters from the previous days windy weather. That isn't their fault, of course. Our tip: Try to go when waters have been calm for several days prior.

Lots of beautiful fish at sombrero reef. Visibility wasn't great but that's just February, I think. The boat felt pretty crowded. One thing to consider for people just riding along, is that getting on the boat is a bit of a challenge for the mobility impaired - it involved stepping on the wide mesh at the front of the catamaran.... All of our expectations were met on this trip. Clean gear and boat. Friendly and safety minded crew. Of course the location doesn't hurt. Sombrero reef is chock full of gorgeous fish and coral. Don't miss lunch at Porky's afterwards! We did a morning trip departing at 9am and it was much less crowded than the afternoon launch we saw... More

Very pleased of this moment with our two children of 8 and 10. Very good advice from the team in the choice of the appropriated day based on the weather and océan conditions.

Captain Dave and his mate took us on a fine 3 hour snorkeling trip. Sombrero Reef was our destination and it did not disappoint. Saw a number of barracuda, parrot fish and thousands of others. Our best snorkeling ever in the keys Highly recommended!
