- DamianIrvine, California1 contributionA must in Key WestI didn't know about this place until my friend and I read about it in a flyer on our way to Key West. It turned out to be one of the highlights of our day trip to Key West. From the outside, it looks like a big butterfly themed gift shop but that's only the entrance to a beautiful paradise. You must visit this conservatory if you like butterflies!!! The ambiance is out of this world. It should be advertised as one of the must see of Key West!!Visited November 2022Written 3 December 2022
- Dave IWestover, Maryland932 contributionsNot that big insideBuilding looks bigger than it really is, but worth the visit. Inside butterflies are literally flying everywhere. A number of different species of birds, finches, doves, quail... The best are Rhett and Scarlet the two flamingos who walk right up to you for their photo op. Love the plants that accompany the exhibits. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Pay to park directly next to the conservatory.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2022
- Jenny ButlerLarkfield, United Kingdom13 contributionsA haze of Blue!A very popular venue. A small queue, but as you enter the conservatory, mind your feet! You walk into a haze of blue butterflies, as well as other butterflies and also birds. This was amazing, just beware that you don't take one away with you!Visited November 2022Written 5 December 2022
- BostonNixCape Cod, Massachusetts359 contributionsPerfect for All AgesThis is a wonderful place for both children and adults. Not only are there many fabulous butterflies, but also beautiful birds. It is not a big place, but it is crammed full of things to see, so take your time. If the turtles are hiding under the bridge, an employee can lure them out with some snacks. And don’t miss the emerging butterflies in the case by the exit.Visited December 2022Written 9 December 2022
- Adrienne SDurham, North Carolina139 contributionsWorth a visit, if you're near the Southernmost PointI'm not a fanatic about butterflies, but stopped in here, since it was near the Southernmost Point. Lots of great plants, and of course butterflies. It was small, and it seems like we were done in about a half hour, but still was fun and worth a look.Visited December 2022Written 10 December 2022
- DJKtravelsWinter Garden, Florida133 contributionsBeautiful and CalmingIt is not a very big area so it can seem crowded. But your focus is on the butterflies flying all around you. It is a great opportunity for photographers as it seems the butterflies and birds are trying to pose for pictures for you. We loved that the names of the plants and trees were displayed to help you plan your own butterfly garden. The guide who was there was very knowledgeable and helpful.Visited December 2022Written 22 December 2022
- 70s Rock AdventureCassopolis, Michigan27 contributionsGorgeous facility of butterflies and some birds. A must doWe even had the blue butterflies land several times on my ball cap. We enjoyed the casual walk-through and a bit of history about their butterflies. We did also buy one of the blue butterflies that were mounted in glass for our daughter and grand daughter.Visited December 2022Written 23 December 2022
- souldancer2Minneapolis, Minnesota367 contributionsLovely placeWe had a lovely visit here! If I could leave 4.5 I would. The only drawback was how crowded it was and with Covid at a high rate in South Florida they should have controlled the numbers even more than they did. That said, though I've been in larger butterfly sanctuaries, this one had so many species along with birds and folks seemed to respect their autonomy to assure their health. It was stunning and too the birds were a nice bonus!Visited December 2022Written 27 December 2022
- Kasey E11 contributionsBeautiful ExhibitHad to wait in line for awhile to see this exhibit. Not sure if this is the norm..or if it was because it was 50 degrees in Key West. Once in it was very crowded. The butterflies were beautiful though. Hundreds of butterflies and birds fly all around you and even land on you. Very short exhibit and a little expensive for the time you are able to spend in there..but if you can find a time that isn't busy..it would be a lot more worth it.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 1 January 2023
- Franklin518Missoula, Montana89 contributionsA highlight of our trip to Key WestA highlight of our trip to Key West. So glad we stopped and did this! The variety of butterflies is amazing and there is an added bonus of some beautiful birds that live among them. Some birds I’ve never seen before. Everything is perfect in this setting and you can take your time going through or sit in the middle and enjoy all of the lovely butterflies going around you. Would highly recommend.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2023

Fantastic experience with so many butterflies & birds plus two beautiful flamingos! Walking through a lush rainforest like environment you’ll see so many brilliant colors on the butterfly wings. Lots to learn also if you take a minute to read all the information available.
Cool gift shop that includes real butterfly display art pieces.

Our family enjoyed our time here. We spent about 45 minutes. Reasonable cost. The birds were actually more beautiful than the butterflies, but everything was lovely and magical.

Amazing conservatory of butterflies and birds. Go early in the morning to avoid the cruise ship rush.
The museum also has a great gift shop with fun options for a souvenir to remember Key West.

Such a unique way to see a part of nature you likely would not otherwise see. Unfortunately the staff ruined the experience. They were closing early for Thanksgiving. This was not posted nor did they tell us when they took our money. Staff was glaring at us when we walked in and was a few steps away staring at us the whole time. Then they said they were closing. As we exited a girl slapped a butterfly on our chests without even acknowledging us. You get the point. RUDE AND OBNOXIOUS!!! Not our fault you had to work on Thanksgiving and didn’t say you were closing early. Go move somewhere that’s not a tourist town!

We’ve been to the butterfly conservatory in Phoenix, but we both agree that Key West surpasses that. Butterflies surround you as you walk in the Conservatory. If you’re a butterfly fan, you can get ideas of what they’re feeding them. Very interesting birds to see if you’re observant. The best gift shop for a little Christmas shopping. Don’t miss it!

Ahhh finally I have made it to this beautiful Key West butterfly garden! After many trips that the timing just didn't work out, I had it as our first stop this time. I see some people in the reviews commenting that it is small or not worth the cost. I will say that it is an outdoor but enclosed garden, and the entire path which winds three times is short, but it is highly concentrated. Come and watch the butterflies living their best life, feasting on fruit plates and flying all over.
When you are here you can feel the delicate but intricately designed wings of all the butterflies and at any time there are up to 1500 butterflies in the garden. We were also quite amazed by some birds who were building a nest inside of a bird house. The flamingos are cool, they seem to hang out in the stream. Beautiful species everywhere you look, and great exotic plants.
Your ticket allows for multiple entries that day and we raced through the information gallery into the garden area. I suggest a return to that first room to digest it all and gain some insight, then another walk into the garden. Don't pass by the nursery, which shows where all of the chrysalises are. The garden hours are 9 - 4:30 and while it is beautiful there is so much to do here in this area and when visiting with the kids can really keep it moving!
While I find the price is fair, I do wish they had a teacher discount or a family discount. Also in the area we visited the Hemmingway House and the Southern Most Point. I have a travel blog where I give itinerary suggestions and share planning details freely. Link is in my bio.

Wasn’t sure why this was rated so high on all the travel forums… now I’m sure. What a special place. So many beautiful butterflies in a lush, tropical garden. We could easily have spent far longer than we did.

I went right when they opened at 9 and after speaking with an employee there I was told that's when the birds and butterflies are most active.

Posted prices were $12 adults $9 military (there are nearby military bases). Plus you can get $2 off coupons in the free tourist guides near the piers and major attractions.
Also I noticed online there are some ticket packages that bundle the Butterfly Conservatory with either the conch train or the streetcar, but Key West also has the free “Duvall shuttle” bus that runs on a loop and has a stop close to the Conservatory.

The area is very small but there is much to take in and admire. I spent about 1/2 hr looking at the many butterflies flying around, butterflies hatching, plans, birds, and the resident flamingoes. It was not at all crowded the day I went, so the path through it was open and I did not feel rushed. But you could actually walk straight through it in a couple of minutes.

We are going to Miami; Key West in November of this year. Has anyone been to the Butterfly Exhibit during this time? Wondering if the butterflies are out during this season.

They release butterflies everyday that have come out of the cocoon stage. Flowers and plants are beautiful year round. There are also birds and other little creatures there. The flamingos are great to watch and have unique personalities
