About
In 1950, the Key West Art & Historical Society, with its own army of volunteers, cleared away years of debris and dust to open Fort East Martello as its first museum. With continued community support, the Society restored this national landmark in accordance with its original 1860s design. Today, visitors can explore the preserved battlement’s collection of relics from the Civil War, learn about the wrecking and cigar-manufacturing industries which shaped the Florida Keys, view the imaginative metal sculptures of Stanley Papio, as well as meet the Ghosts of East Martello, including the infamous Robert the Doll.

located a short walk from the Key West Airport Terminal, the Fort Martello Museum is worth the time if you're interested in Civil War History and Robert The Doll.
There is an admission price, a small gift shop and friendly staff to answer questions about the history of the structure commissioned by Abraham Lincoln.

They do a very good ghost tour with historical stories about the fort and the tales of the haunted aspect we’re good. The highlight of the tour (Robert the doll) was most interesting.

Seeing Rober the Doll was a thrilling experience. Aside from that: the fort is beautiful and the history behind it is super interesting. The woman working was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Pretty interesting old museum. Needed some clean up and freshening of displays. Robert the Doll was pretty freaky! Good items at the gift shop.

From the cruise port/stop area, what’s the easiest method of getting to the museum.

It's a bit late, but the trolley tour that lets you hop on & off has this place as one of their 13 stops. There are usually coupons online that'll get you a few dollars off of the trolley ticket.

I assume they would be open during Fantasy Fest...all the attractions are open as I remember. Fantasy Fest is a great adult experience.

did Robert and the building survive Irma

Yes. Robert is in an old fort, but it's built rather tough. Plus, he's inside a glass dome, so he would have been safe either way. Robert's been around a long, long time. I'm sure he can pretty much survive anything. :O

What is the name of the artist whose art is featured in the museum?

Stanley Joseph Papi Born in Canada and Raised in Illinois. After Military service he settled in Key Largo, and started a welding business that serviced all of the Keys. But disturbed the neighbors with his crazy gaudy art, the more they complained the wilder the art got. It was an interesting trip. I was surprised it was so cheap and not more people there. This is a hidden gem to be sure.
