Description:

Nestled in the heart of a modern downtown, History Fort Lauderdale's campus...

Nestled in the heart of a modern downtown, History Fort Lauderdale's campus includes 3 museums that tell the story of how a wartime fort became a modern city. The campus is the largest collection of historic buildings remaining in Broward County.

The History Museum, housed in the 1905 New River Inn, contains exhibits from prehistoric through present day. The King Cromartie House Museum (1907) is set as if the family will return at any moment for Sunday supper. Upstairs tour Louise King's sewing room, family bedrooms with period sleepwear, children's room with period dollhouse and antique dolls. The 1899 Schoolhouse Museum is complete with period wooden desks and textbooks.

Docent-led tours of all 3 museums begin every day at 1 PM, 2 PM and 3PM. Walking & Boat Tours, which include admission to all 3 museums, are also available with reservations.

Recently I visited the research building in order to get information on my grandfather. The atmosphere was quiet and the staff was very attentive Kamal and Patricia were so helpful. The files were easy to access and full of history. This place is near the history museum and is on the Riverfront of the New River. If Your are the... More

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society is located across from the Old Fort Lauderdale Village and Museum and is a nice break from the present spending a few hours in simpler times. As the exhibits and staff will inform you, however, those times weren't so simple for the people who lived through them. Normally I would go into detail about what... More

Where else can you visit a great Museum and early 20th century buildings plus a research center? This is the place. Even though it is small and does not take a lot of time, the area is beautiful and peaceful and the exhibits are educational and interesting. Located on the New River and next to the Riverfront, you can really... More

They are housed in modern building with nice decor and tropical landscape. The staff has it well maintained. They have a lot of historical information and pictures, most of the information also on computer.

This is close to everything and worth the price of admission. Right by the river. If you are in to genealogy this is right up your alley.

The docent tour was worth the few extra dollars (ask about senior rates). It's astonishing how the early settlers coped with this rugged place and almost unbelievable that it was just 100 years ago. Would have liked the tour to be a bit more about the individuals rather then the explaining how the ice box worked.

If you happen to be in the area it's worth calling in. We did the self guided tour which doesn't include the old school house next door. We watched a short film and then toured the upstairs rooms detailing the early settlement of Fort Lauderdale. The River walk at this end is a bit down at heel and several empty... More

We enjoyed our visit of this museum. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. After viewing a short video on the area, the docent took us to the house and schoolhouse providing interesting info on the area history. The museum display in the first building has many photos and a good self tour to review.
