About
Accredited by the American Association of Museums and listed on the national Register of Historic Places, this 35-acre historic estate on Fort Lauderdale Beach is an extraordinary blend of art, history and nature. The whimsically-designed house was built in 1920 and was home to artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett. Bonnet House was the romantic, whimsical winter getaway of wealthy Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife, Evelyn Fortune Bartlett, an artist in her own right. But unlike lavish show-palaces of the era, Bonnet House was a very personal, intimate creation intended just for family and close friends. It's been perfectly preserved in its 1930's and 40's period of significance, full of delightful surprises.

My favorite part of my visit was learning the history of the bonnet house and viewing the beautiful artwork. Mr Hugh Taylor Birch was a true conservationist. An interesting fact is that when the property was deeded to the city it was stipulated that there was to be no building on the mile plus stretch of beach across from the mansion. Such a forward thinking philanthropist was Mr Birch. The Florida state park just across Sunrise blvd is named in his honor.

We took a guided tour with Linda, and it really made the history of the house and the Birch and Bonnet families come alive. There's quite a bit of Bonnet's whimsical art throughout, and although the tour did not show all the rooms, you will come away with a very special cocktail recipe! My favorite part was the inside courtyard. It's just beautiful, and I could sit there all day.

I had a great experience at the Bonnet House. The entire experience from beginning to end was amazing. First off the staff is extremely knowledgeable and add a friendly element right off the bat. The home is well maintained and the layout is easily navigable. The gardens and lawns are beautiful and make for great pictures. The information was also valuable and uniquely Floridian.

Most of the rooms on the tour are air conditioned but you do have to walk in and out of each room into the courtyard where there are warm ocean breezes in the summer and cool breezes in the winter.

What is the cost

Around $25, half off for kids, im sure they have a website if you just search it up you will find it, but its not cheap, like i said, 25ish. If you stay A few hrs and enjoy the history and tours its worth it. Very interesting place, but to get your moneys worth plan an afternoon tour.

When is the best time of year in terms of the flowers blooming?
DANET65
St. Petersburg, Russia177 contributions
Bonnet House is known for their orchids collection. Just do not go on their orchids tour (20$ per person) in November. The flowers were not in bloom.
In general, it is challenging to specify bloom seasons for orchids. Some of them bloom multiple times per year, other kinds - only once a year. Phalaenopsis and psychopsis are in bloom almost all year round.
Bottom line: better ask the staff before you book the tour.
