We drove to Jebel Shams for a couple of days of walking in the mountains. We didn't do what most people seem to come here to do. We had decided in advance that the Balcony Walk probably wasn't for us - it looked a bit too busy and a bit too scary in places. We spent the first day following the W4 walk along the top of the canyon. It's a steady walk requiring only a moderate level of fitness. We didn't see another walker on the W4 route all day, so I would recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of peace and quiet. The views are breathtaking and there are plenty of great spots to sit and have lunch. On the second day, we picked up a trail behind one of the resorts in Jebel Shams, walked it for a while before going off piste to explore the nearby gullies. It was a bit more strenuous with some slow going on the rocky descents, but still accessible to most.…

We stood on the ledge of the viewing platform and gazed into this amazing canyon. It is breathtaking and even a bit scary with the protective railing there. Then we drove our 4 wheel drive to the so called balcony walk to hike to the village. At first it seems nice - we walked for a while loving the atmosphere and excited for the experience. After about ten minutes you get to a trail - only the trail is very narrow like one to two feet and it goes over rocks and the drop off is very dangerous like a mile or two straight down. There is no room for a stumble - you would die. It is not safe for a child under 16 and we promptly turned around. I was almost paralyzed with fear ten min into this hike - looking down. To be honest I would not even do this hike if I did not have a nine year old child. We saw three other families do the same thing we did - turn around after a few min due to the danger. It is a shame as I would loved to have done it - they need to install a railing or make it less dangerous. I wonder how many folks have died here and it will happen - it is just a matter of time. But I also saw countless people returning from the hike - some were even carrying a pack with a child in it. To me, the risk was not worth it. So we stayed at the beginning of the hike where it is safe and let our daughter climb the rocks. There were goats and sheep here and we even saw three goats climb on top of a SUV to eat from a tree.…

I loved everything about Jebel Shams, but I'm glad I did a little research first. + The scenery is obviously the most amazing part. But read up on the geology of the region and you'll appreciate it even more. + The drive up to the top is exciting and beautiful. + Beware: Parts of the road are gravel. A 2WD car can make the trip, but it will be challenging. + Photos don't do it justice. + Road signs aren't very helpful. When I refer to Jebel Shams I mean the scenic drive up and the overlooks at the top.…
