Established as a migratory bird refuge, much of this wildlife refuge is marsh or swamp and is accessible only by boat. In addition to the birds – there are about 215 species detectable – the swamp area holds many kinds of fish and even alligators.

Located near De Leon Springs, this was a somewhat "off the beaten path" visit as the refuge appeared in research but we had not heard of it previously. This turned out to be a boon because the trails had very few people and we had...More

Beautiful refuge with trails within the Hammock. Minimal wildlife after rain storm. Highlight of trip was seeing Barred Owl who stayed around long enough for photos. Would be great place to canoe. If in area will certianly return for more hiking.

I was so grateful for the opportunity to spend a few short minutes exploring this gem in the middle of nowhere, or so it seemed. I intend to go back for more hiking, exploring and photographs.

A visit to Lake Woodruff is a great way to get to know the real Florida. Most of the refuge is actually water, and you'd need a boat to explore it. However, the main entrance has access to several hiking trails. There is a small...More

I've seen nesting eagles, otters, Bobcats, swallow tail kites, marsh rabbits and many of the wading shore birds you would expect! It's worth the time. You can hike to an observation tower were you can look down and see alligators, harrier hawks and many more....More

I used to visit here as a child, and was pleasantly surprised to see it's still just as beautiful! My husband and I enjoyed an easy short walk to the observation tower, and saw so much in that short time. There are many different trails...More

There aren't any boardwalk trails, but the field trail is flat for quite a length of time. The short loop trail we went on was flat, i can't recall how the roots or anything like that were. I'd say the field would be good if... More
