At more than 85,000 acres, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park is Florida's largest state park. More native orchid species, including the rare Ghost Orchid, grow in this wilderness than anywhere else in the United States. The park's wildlife is as diverse as its flora. Rare species such as the American crocodile and West Indian manatee live in the waterways to the south, while Florida black bears, Everglades mink and endangered Florida panthers inhabit orther regions of the park.

For many, the most memorable introduction to this wilderness is a swamp walk. strolling through the slow moving slough waters with a naturalist.

Drove Prius 5-11 mph. Turned around after 7.6 mi. Saw some gators. Going 5 mph, panther ran past us driver's side, 3.1 miles from asphalt. No spots, rich tawny color. Was in view 3-4 seconds.

It was a beautiful sunny and cool day for our November visit to Fakahatchee Strand Preserve. Friends of the Fakahatchee have wonderful volunteers who support this unique Florida State Park. The history of the park and natural characteristics were enthusiastically shared by our guide, Patrick Higgins. He told interesting stories while we traveled by tram, walked in drier prairie areas... We first took a tram down the dirt road which once served as a logging road, making stops along the way to get out and see and learn about the flora and fauna. The next stop was the swamp where we were greeted by a juvenile, about 5.5 ft., alligator on one side of the road. We were headed the... More

The Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park "Swamp Walk" was probably the most exciting and memorable experience of any Florida sight seeing trip or event I have participated in over the last 10 years. I never thought I would be wading through the swamps of the Florida Everglades..not in my wildest dreams! But on this particular day I did and it... More

We opted to set out on what we saw on a map as 'Janes scenic drive'. Like some other reviewers, we were in a simple rental car. We passed a sign near the Fakahatchee visitor centre, where we paid our $3 entry fee, which indicated that the road ahead was affected by floods and weather, and could become impassable at... More

We would like to express our gratitude to volonteers of Fakahatchee for their great work! The preserve is really wild and beautiful and at the same time it very convenient to visiting and watching real life of wild animals! It was our first visiting of Florida's swamps, we spent one day into Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park & Boardwalk and... More

Janes Scenic Drive is very rough and should only be driven by people who have both experience of driving off road and have a high clearance four wheel dive vehicle. A alternative is the Big Cypress Bend Boarwalk. It is about a mile long and ends in a gator hole. It passes through some of the thickest vegetation in the... More

We did the boardwalk which is accessed from the US 41. The requested donation is $3 and it is a very easy walk. We saw alligators, snakes, turtles, osprey and so much more. It was not busy and so very satisfying to spot wildlife in a true natural environment. We saw much more here than we did in Shark Valley... More

Those of you who want a perfect, highway quality road will want to steer away from this drive. It is in the middle of the everglades and obviously very difficult to maintain with the amount of rain we receive in South Florida. That being said, its a little rough, but not that bad. We managed fine in both a truck... More

There are no words to describe the experience. We stopped there almost by chance, because we had a paddling tour in Everglades city and then asked about what to do next. The boardwalk is unfortunately not easily seen, although it is on the Everglades park map. The boardwalk is long, probably a quarter mile or longer, very well kept and... More
