We kayaked around Artesa Otie Island and trekked into the interior for a taste of tropical history. While fishing from our kayaks in a tranquil lagoon, we were surrounded by a pod of over ten bottlenose dolphins.. The dolphins swam around and under us with one large bull snorting three loud puffs within three feet of the boats. Wow! a... More

We came to this area 20 years ago & it hasn't changed, it's a hidden gem & one you must make the effort to see. It is a bit off the beaten track, but it is definitely worth it. The scenery is simply stunning & the wild life is every where. We went on a self guided drive around the... More

When in Cedar Key I look forward to exploring the Cedar Keys NWR. This includes the number of islands accessible by boat and kayak. We enjoyed photographing the Refuge and certainly the birding opportunities. The waters around the islands provide an opportunity for the fisherman to pursue many species of fish, including Trout and Redfish. Cedar Key provides restaurants, hotels,... More

For those looking for "Old Florida" and unspoiled areas, the Cedar Keys area is everything you're looking for. There are many houses for rent (mostly fairly inexpensive) and the outer keys are pristine wilderness. Of note is Atsena Otie key which was actually a small town back in the 1800's. Now completely abandoned, there are nature trails and a few... More

I loved that you had to access atsena otie by water. Makes it feel special and secluded! Very cool place.

The wildlife and vistas from the pier are wonderful. We were really thrilled by the flocks of skimmers. But the real draw is the old shell mounds. It is hard to believe one 5 acre mound was 6,000 years old. I highly recommend this refuge. We were also excited to see sting rays from the pier.

Get in your canoe, kayak or sup and get out there. A treasure , the The real Florida, the history of the shell mounds only add to it.

Nice area to walk around and learn a bit of the history about the key. Make sure to bring plenty of bug dope as the mosquitoes are relentless. If you are looking to paddle around the key make sure the tide is in.
