A great hike from Astorga took me through Foncebadón and on to el Acebo...but not without a stop to Cruz de Ferro. I arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see no large crowds or bussed in tourists. One should definitely...More

I can't say that the Cruz de Fierro was what I was expecting, when it rose out of the mist I was surprised that there was no view down into the valleys below (which I couldn't have seen due to the mist anyways) and I...More

Very spiritual place where one leaves a token (usually a stone) from their life or home in order to pray and liberate yourself from burdens. There are rest areas and a chapel close by and this is a magical place for any pilgrim on the...More

Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross)– This is a small cross set on a high oak post above an impressive mound of stones left by pilgrim’s over the centuries. This is a must stop on the Camino. The laying of a stone here symbolizes the leaving...More

Along the Camino de Santiago half way between Astorga and Ponferrada. It's just a tall post with a cross on top. Pilgrims say a prayer or leave a stone at the site giving thanks for whatever reason.

The highest point of the Camino and a special place. Take a stone from home and leave it here. Altough I must admit, the way up and down over the mountains was the real highlight.

Highest point of Camino Frances, an amazing experience of tossing the stones we brought from our home countries symbolising how we let go of our sins/life burden. Beautiful! PS: good stop for resting after that 3 km hike - no drinkable water fountain.

The place is right on El Camino... you will not miss it. You may bring a stone from your home and deposit it here, if you wish. A good place to stop and ponder on why you got this place. Some people have left pictures,...More

As mentioned earlier this is one of the highest parts of the Camino and a welcome sight for the pilgrims. Lucky to see this along with our friends and to see all the stones and momentos gathering at the foot of the Iron Cross by...More

From Foncebadón, it's an easy 2-3 km hike up to the Cruz de Ferro. I left before dawn so as to see the sun come up from this Camino milestone. By getting there early, I almost had the site to myself. What a beautiful site...More
