Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powdered by the natural resources that surrounded it. Today it is 235 acres of wooded rolling hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with hundreds of stone ruins of the black powder industry, dozens of restored buildings associated with the business, and the first du Pont family home built in America. Here, for more than 200 years, the DuPont Company and family experimented, innovated, and pursued the American Dream.

Hagley has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1972. The site is a National Historic Landmark, National Recreation Trail, and a Historic Engineering Landmark.

The display of patent models from the 1800's is unique and first-rate. You'll find everything from improved mouse traps, to washing machines, to swinging porch swings. This is a terrific testament to American inventiveness. Superbly displayed. Staff very helpful. Well worth your time.

A wonderful Christmas visit to Hagley! The house was beautifully decorated - as it would have been through the years. Our guide was very knowledgable and it was an easy bus ride from the visitor center to the house.

This place is interesting on so many levels. It's a great place to tour and take visitors. This museum does not require reservations. A great place for young and old. Seems to be open all year with different beauty each season. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Looks like a great place to volunteer.

We love going to the Hagley. We became members because we realized it would take several visits to see everything. We took our grandchildren Thanksgiving weekend for the activities that were offered. It is fascinating to learn about the manufacture of gun powder as well as learn more about the Du Pont family. The millwright's shop uses the original pulley... More

It has been over ten years since I was last at Hagley. We were pleased to see that military families are granted free admission year round. We visited with our children (9,12,14, &15) and grandparents. There was plenty of variety and everyone enjoyed the visit. Two notes: 1. Our visit took 4 hours,& we skipped cafe and school house area.... More

I lived in Wilmington Delaware for about six years and even though I drove by the Hagley Museum, mostly because I lived close by I never made it to the museum until I had moved away for about 16 years. The museum is amazing with live working water power from the Brandywine River that creates power to operate the old... More

Were there more than 10 times now. That's a perfect place to visit for newcomers - you'll have perfect knowledge about Delaware's and DuPont's history. Most things i like happened 2 per year: Fireworks at summer - you NEED to visit it. Is is so cool and entertaining. Winter tours to DuPont's house with Christmas decorations inside. Enjoyed our day here at Hagley. Our tour guide, Brenda, was great, and all the staff were warm and friendly. The Christmas display was grand and it was interesting to get a glimpse of how the DuPont family celebrated the holidays! This is a must see. Really get to appreciate the way things were built and how America came into the industrial times.
