Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powdered by the natural resources that surrounded it. Today it is 235 acres of wooded rolling hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with hundreds of stone ruins of the black powder industry, dozens of restored buildings associated with the business, and the first du Pont family home built in America. Here, for more than 200 years, the DuPont Company and family experimented, innovated, and pursued the American Dream.

Hagley has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1972. The site is a National Historic Landmark, National Recreation Trail, and a Historic Engineering Landmark.

I lived in Wilmington Delaware for about six years and even though I drove by the Hagley Museum, mostly because I lived close by I never made it to the museum until I had moved away for about 16 years. The museum is amazing with live working water power from the Brandywine River that creates power to operate the old... More

Were there more than 10 times now. That's a perfect place to visit for newcomers - you'll have perfect knowledge about Delaware's and DuPont's history. Most things i like happened 2 per year: Fireworks at summer - you NEED to visit it. Is is so cool and entertaining. Winter tours to DuPont's house with Christmas decorations inside. There are numerous... More

Enjoyed our day here at Hagley. Our tour guide, Brenda, was great, and all the staff were warm and friendly. The Christmas display was grand and it was interesting to get a glimpse of how the DuPont family celebrated the holidays! The cafe was a bit disappointing and the woman who waited on us was not friendly and seemed a... More

This is a must see. Really get to appreciate the way things were built and how America came into the industrial times. The live exhibits are very informative and helps you understand things that probably you always wondered about but now you know. It was a refreshing visit to the past. The property is absolutely beautiful and well maintained. Their... More

You need a day here. Very interesting history of the du Pont family and how they came to own such amazing houses. Very good working models in exhibitions around the site, great interactive exhibitions in the houses during Thanksgiving weekend from suitably dressed docents. Highly recommended. Good for all ages.

We love Hagley Museum. We came with our daughter and her boyfriend. The weather was a bright autumn day. The demonstrations are always well explained. It is amazing the power that can be harvested from water flow. The mansion is gorgeous. They will be decorate for Christmas soon. During the summer it is a great place to walk along a... More

One begins their visit at the Visitor Center where there are exhibitions that document the early years of the Brandywine Valley. The first du Pont family home built in America is Eleutherian Mills-a Georgian style residence. This home is furnished with antiques, artwork and memorabilia from five generations of the family. Outside the home, there is a formal French garden.... More

I have been to Hagley a number of times, but was taking a friend's eight-year-old for the first time. Including lunch, we expected to stay about 4 hours. We wound up rushing to get everything we wanted to do done, and didn't quite accomplish that even in 5 hours! There was so much to see, and so many activities for... More

Hayley Museum and Library is a look at the life and times of the people who produced black powder during the revolutionary war and for years after. There is plenty to see including the restored home of the DuPonts, a machine shop and the remnants of the powder mills and storage. There is a guided tour and it is the... More

Unfortunately it was a breathtakingly hot day so we trudged through the trees slowly. the process was interesting i had never thought about making gun powder. the gift shop had a few goodies and the little cafe at the top of the hill had very welcome lemonade.
