As an avid trail rider, this was just the thing I needed to get off the beaten path at the beach and I managed to do 18 miles thanks to another reviewer’s expert advice. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It was so easy to follow signage from Lewes public libretto to downtown Rehoboth and then back up through Henlopen acres through Gordon’s Pond and up Rt. 9 to Lewes again. Flat terrain, some shade and incredible views. Make sure you leave time for a stop at Whiskey Beach. It’s gorgeous!

gorgeous spot to ride a bike, have a drink or a bite to eat. there is a coffee shop in the Ferry building as well.

All of Rehoboth Beach is gorgeous. The trail leading to this location is gorgeous...... a definite while visiting Rehoboth.

Parked at the trailhead off of Hebron Road and walked about 2 miles out (4 miles round trip). Nice peaceful trail in early March in great weather. Other walkers and most bikers were very friendly. Trail is flat, covered most of the way in crushed stone so there is no mud. Probably would not suggest the walk on a hot day as there are areas without the benefit of shade.
While the trailhead does not have much parking, you can park at the Tanger Outlets and access the trail from there.

.....but I don't have to because I live 10 miles from several trailheads. The Junction Breakwater trail is part of a trail system that connects Lewes to Rehoboth Beach Delaware. The only way to really understand this trail system is to just do it yourself because it's hard to get a clear description of where it starts, ends, and connects. I've decided that the easiest way to pick up the trail is park at the Lewes, Delaware public library. There is a big parking lot there and it's a starting point for the Lewes-Georgetown Trail and the JBT. Head north from the library on the Lewes - Georgetown trail to the Lewes canal. It is a very brief ride. Turn right at the canal and you will see the access to the JBT start.
JBT starts as a paved trail and runs in and out of several communities. It integrates well with the landscape and is reasonably well marked. It is 5.8 miles from this access to Rehoboth. After you ride through several communities in Lewes the trail becomes a very fine gravel trail. I would not be comfortable riding my racing bike on this section, but it's totally appropriate for all other types of bikes. This is an amazing section which is very scenic and nicely wooded. It does cross several roads before reaching Rehoboth, but I have never had trouble crossing any of these roads. There are two exit points along the trail - both go to trail heads. I have not visited these trailheads so I can't comment other than to say they access points are well marked.
The trail ends on Hebron Rd in Rehoboth. You could turn around here and ride back, but why? If you follow the bike lane from Hebron Rd you will end up in Rehoboth proper. You can continue to follow a well marked asphalt trail that runs right next to the Rehoboth Beach traffic, but only for a brief period of time. Make a left at the Rehoboth Beach visit center and before you know it you are in Henlopen acres. Ride the residential streets here and through North Beach and you will find yourself in the Rehoboth Cape Henlopen state park area. There is no charge to ride your bike into the state park.
There is a nice pavilion at the end of the parking lot where you can take a break because if you've followed these instructions than you have ridden about 10 miles. After your break you can access the Gordon Pond Trail. From the access to the Gordon Pond Trail to the Cape May Lewes Ferry it is about 5.2 miles. The Gordon Pond trail is lovely and quite scenic. It ends at the other side of the Cape Henlopen State Park. There are several bike loops here in the state park. One trail goes to Fort Miles. I recommend this trail for pretty views of the Atlantic Ocean. Another trail goes into the Camp Ground.
The trail system in this part of the state park is not that well marked, but no matter where you go you should be able to exit the park on the same road where the Cape May Lewes Ferry is located. If you are looking for a longer ride you can explore the other trails in Cape Henlopen state park.
Once you exit the park there is a connector trail which takes you past the ferry and to route 9. You can continue to follow this connector trail into the historic section of Lewes. However, be alert that the trail actually ends abruptly in town and you will have to ride in traffic back to the library. On the other hand, you can make a left on Rt 9, go over the bridge that crosses the canal, and end up back at the Lewes Library. Rt 9 has a nice, wide shoulder. This is about a 18 or 19 mile ride total.
I hope this description helps someone is wants to explore this loop. If you want to make you ride longer the Lewes-Georgetown trail heads west about 5.5 miles. Enjoy!

Beautiful trail. Wide, scenic, and safe. You can ride for hours and see so much. The trail connects several communities and you can shop in the towns it joins. It’s pretty flat so it’s a leisurely ride.

this is one of my favorite spots in Rehoboth Beach, walking around those ships is just incredible. Check it out if your ever in the area, you will not be disappointed

My sisters and I ride bikes or walk this trail in the spring and fall. We love it! It’s so scenic and peaceful.

This is my favorite walk with nature. You experience flocks of snow geese, woodpeckers, squirrels, deer, fox, turtles and frogs while enjoying a walk on a well maintained trail. Don't want to walk. Then ride your bicycle. The trail joins two lovely beaches towns and you don't have to be on the highway.

This is a great trail for bili ng por walking. But if you bike it the best thing to do is make a loop by connecting with the Henlopen Park Gordons Trail Path.

Can we ride our bikes from our hotel ( we’re staying 2 blocks from the boardwalk area bandstand) directly to this trail? Or is this a drive to destination? Thanks

You can ride to the trail. You will be on the street, but there is plenty of room to ride and a lot of bikes. After the drawbridge. there is a bike lane on the road which makes it easier.

Yes, go to (de state parks) for trail maps. You should also view the Gordon's Pond trail, salt marsh, and bike loop. Maps will show you where to park, too. Enjoy! I would recommend trail bikes, not road bikes. The surface has some sand and gravel.
