I have been hiking these trails for decades, mostly with my dog. They are for everyone as some are flat and easy, while others are hilly and challenging. You can ride horses on some by the Shepaug River, and there are areas for picnics, barbecues, and swimming. Steep Rock also sponsors an annual picnic run by volunteer members and occasional... More

Although there are three trails one can hike, we chose to stay on the level road that runs along both side of the Shepaug River. We were looking for a place that we could walk our dog and remembered Steep Rock as a dog friendly place. We have lived in SE CT all of our lives, and while familiar to... More

Steep Rock consists of three separate hiking areas in Washington, CT. The main area has numerous trails, some of which are good for horses. Some trails run along side the Shepaug River. Given the season, the water height will vary. There is a foot bridge across the river. A portion of the trail runs along the old rail bed of... More

They have several trails. One for everyone and well marked. Hiking here was delightful, scenic and peaceful (less crowded on weekday)

We don't live in the area, but we decided to try this hike on the way home from Mohegan Sun. There was plenty of room to park, and it was free. The hike to the top of the mountain to see the view wasn't that difficult, but the view nice...not spectacular. If you want a great view, check out the... More

Our family of four, with kids ages 13 and 10, love to hike here with our dogs. You can park in either of two lots, one on each side of the river. If you have young kids, you can do a short, flat hike along the river, using the two bridges to cross over the river and back so you... More

Steep Rock is one of my favorite hikes in CT, and I've been on many. The levels of difficulty vary, so my advice is to be mindful of your footwear and be prepared for a nice workout. The view from the peak is stunning with emphasis on seasonal views. For the amount of people who do tend to go there,... More

Lots to see along the way and to discover, not at all boring. Great for families. Enough uphill to keep your hear pumping. Beautiful frozen river scenery and well maintained. Signage could be a bit better.

This is one of the best kept secrets in western Connecticut. It's one of the last pristine places where you can hike in a varied terrain. You can walk along a flat trail along the Shepaug river or hike up to the steep rock summit. I've been coming here for over 40 years and every time I visit steep rock,... More
