The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is an essential stop on the itinerary for all visitors travelling through New Zealand, offering an interesting and entertaining experience incorporating the famous film set as seen in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep and beef farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the village, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing you the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made. You will be taken around the 12 acre set; past Hobbit holes, the Mill and into the famous Green Dragon™ Inn, where you can indulge in our exclusive, specially brewed beverages to conclude your own Middle-earth™ adventure.

    Exceeded expectations!~
The Second Breakfast tour was incredible, I had high expectations and they were exceeded. The building with the water wheel was beautifully crafted and quaint - Jamie and the team did an incredible job, welcoming and smiling, the food delicious, and made a huge effort for a vegetarian meal for the woman I was sitting next to. Our tour guide was fun and we learned so much about the set. Highly recommend to everyone.

    Hobbition day experience
Amazing experience, tour guide from Hobbiton from Victoria, very funny and knowledgable, wish we had more time to spend at the Tavern, would have loved to done the buffet experience. It's definitely a to do activity if you have the time and money. Also an inclusive activity, just suggest you speak with the providers prior to your trip, my mum has a dodgy hip and knee so she got to experience the tour on a golf buggy - she absolutely loved it and has recommended to all her work colleagues in Auckland.

A must visit place for the hobbit and lord of the rings fans. It was a guided tour and our tour guide was from the USA and she was great in explaining each part of the set and what it was used for. The locale was beautiful and at the end of your tour you get a free drink at the Green Dragon.

LOTR / Hobbit fan.. DO THIS TOUR.
A must do if youre a fan. Amazing experiance. Guides were full of enthusiasm and knowledge. Proper nerds which was great. Olivia is a gem and i think it was mike was a great guide. Went on a late tour with meal in the green dragon inn. No words.. itwasa brilliant experiance. The food was out of this world.. the best lamb i have ever tasted and the amount of food was astonishing. Took my daughter and she is vegitarian and they catered for her requirements perfectly. They were all so friendly and accomodating. Id go over and over again if i didnt live the otherside of the world.

    Amazing!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was a little put off by the price but I’m so glad we ended up going. Our family of 3 (2 school aged kids) really enjoyed our tour with buffet lunch. Even though the kids hadn’t seen the movies the set was still pretty magical to them. Hobbiton was a lot bigger than I was expecting and the whole operation (buses, shop, dining hall, bar, hobbit holes) was a lot grander than I was expecting. The attention to detail is exceptional. The food was delicious, drinks were lovely, your guide was funny and well organised. So many photo opportunities. I’d love to go back when their construction of the new hobbit hole rooms is complete

    A day of wonder.
From the time I parked I knew I was in for a good day. The lovely ticketing staff where welcoming and helpful giving me all the info that I needed. I then proceeded to the warm and inviting cafe and enjoyed a warm beverage before my tour just anticipating the tour ahead. Once on the bus ready for the tour I could barely contain my excitement for what had been many years of waiting. To walk among the hobbit holes and to see bag end was a bucket list moment for me. Then to cap it all off we got to eat like a hobbit and have a drink at the green dragon. I was like a kid again.

Try You will never regret! 🙂
It was one of the best experiences I had. We took the tour which was done by MR. TOM . staying for more than 10 years . The team from hobbiton was incredible! We arrived then bus drive for 10 mins to reach the place. The team will explain everything related to the movie. It is one of the unique experiences that everyone should try! The best part that they give complimentary beer ( which is only brewed in Hobbiton) , tea , and juices at the end of the tour, which was perfect with weather 👌 DM me for this incredible tour guide ! Has his private Van . Max capacity is 5 passengers only! Definitely recommend for small group.

    Fun experience
I would say that we are ‘average’ fans of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies/books, in that we have seen them, but would not describe ourselves as huge fans. To be honest, when they spoke about events in the films that occurred at various locations, we could not for the most part remember them! I say this because we still loved the experience here. The location is glorious and gives a nice taste of New Zealand. It is very easy to get to and we drove rather than doing a tour. It was very informative and provided ample picture time. Overall it is about 1.5hr and certainly worth doing for multiple reasons. We would have no hesitation in recommending it.

    Worth stopping off for
We stopped off to do the tour on our way from Auckland to Rotorura - 2 hours from Auckland and then an hour onwards. It was quite busy so we were pleased we’d booked but they offered us a 1220 tour instead of our 1310 one. We were shown round by the impressively bi-lingual German, David, who seemed to have mastered the entire canon of Tolkien and Peter Jackson. You catch a bus out to the site, watching an intro video on the way, and then walk round, finishing with a choice of alcoholic beers or non-alcoholic ginger beer in the Shire pub. It’s well done and the anecdotes of the filming are interesting. The Old Shire’s Rest cafe offered some good options afterwards for a reasonable price.

If you looooved The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings, you will love to see this, but be prepared for disappointments. The reality is that they book big groups (over 30 per ‘bus’) every 5 minutes. So once you eventually get to the ‘set’, despite your excitement, you come to realise you can’t take a photo without a crowd of tourists in the shots. The guides comments of ‘tale as many pictures as you want’ and ‘I’ll help you’ are ridiculous because your group is jammed between two others. The group is too big for the guide to be heard so inevitably people at the back get the incorrect information. Ours apologised to the people who got first photos taken at special spots, that they had to wait for everyone else! She didn’t apologise to all we who’d had to wait, then got forced forward by the next tour guide! We were told not to step off the path...I was right on the edge taking a picture of the ‘valley’ whilst waiting our turn, and another group guide pushed me...yes actually pushed! I was disgusted at how they treated all of us. I know these movies were amazing & there is the chance to make more money out of them afterwards, but if I’m going to the effort to travel to NZ and pay good money to see it, I don’t expect the treatment we got. The Shire’s Rest was a tin shed, the ‘souvenirs’ highly overpriced, and the drink you get at the set site was poured so long ago, it has lost all sign of being a carbonated fluid. This was going to be the biggest thing for me in NZ, but instead it was a big disappointment. I acknowledge the set itself is fabulous & being up kept well, but the methodology being used is disrespectful of fee paying customers. I’m glad I saw it though and whilst not wanting to put anyone off, I feel they need to know the reality of what the experience will be...one way, no one off the path, wall to wall people every second and no reasonable time to appreciate or photograph as promised.

We just couldn't resist. At first we were were a bit worried about the price, but it's worth every cent, especially if you're a big LOTR/Hobbit Fan like us. The tour was amazing. As we were the last tour of the day, we had the whole shire to us. Our guides Luke and Rebecca were both awesome - super friendly, motivated and happy to answer every question we had. The whole tour was very intimate. We had enough time to stroll around, take heaps of pictures and enjoy the beautiful view of Hobbiton. Of course the dinner at the Green Dragon was the highlight. Just wow. We got a free complimentary drink outside of the green dragon while sitting at the lake, afterwards we got to sit down inside at old rustic tables in a beautiful atmosphere. The dinner was great. We are vegetarians and still got lots to choose from, everybody was well fed. The dessert was so tasy, they put so much effort in the food and every detail. The evening ended with a lantern walk through Hobbiton, just in front of the lakeside. Luke said a few words about the movie and the filming and it was so emotional, I had to cry. You could see that Luke was a huge fan of the movie himself and I appreciated his speech a lot. Hobbiton is a special place, we shouldn't take it for granted. Thanks for the awesome night, we are beyond happy!

Tour to Hobbiton, Matamata New Zealand.

Is it worth it or not?

If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbiton film series then you should visit this place.

Normally tourist agents usually ask for 150$ inclusive of transportation (pick up and drop off) to Auckland City and the entrance fee. If you have an international driving license and you think its gonna work in New Zealand better drive to Hobbiton with friends/family. It is about 2 hours drive from Auckland if you are not aware of the location Google Maps and GPS are there to support you.

You can only visit Hobbiton as part of a guided tour. Ticket fees will cost you 84$ for adults (ages 17 and above) 42$ for youth (ages 9-16 ) and free of charge for children below 8 years old. The fee is inclusive of a bus trip from the shrine rest/matamata isite with two hours guided tour and a free pint at the Green Dragon.

Fall in love with the Alexander family sheep farm, just as acclaimed director Sir Peter Jackson did, as you journey through the unequivocal beauty of the land, with the mighty Kaimai Ranges towering in the distance. Your guide will then escort you around the set, showing the intricate detailing, pointing out the most famous locations and explaining how the movie magic was made.

It is one of the top tourist attractions in New Zealand and must put in your bucket list.

Here some photos I took..

This experience was truly wonderful and a highlight of our time in New Zealand. The guide was friendly, and even offered to take a video of us running past shouting "I'm going on an adventure!" at the same spot it was done in the movie. They also allowed plenty of time for pictures as we went along. The tour ends at the Green Dragon Inn, where the drinks are tasty, the interior is every bit as quaint as the rest of the tour, and we highly recommend the beef & ale pie. The cookies were pretty hard, but that may be more of a cultural difference (US vs. NZ/other countries).

This tour is a must for Tolkien fans, LOTR fans, Hobbit fans, and fantasy movie buffs! Our guide, Emily (aka Lady Gaga) was funny, informative, and very patient with our bus load of fans with clicking cameras. The set itself was very well done, with plenty of hobbit-holes to view and photograph, and everywhere I looked, the set was bursting with colourful flowers and homey touches to make you feel like you were on location during the filming. The included drink at the Green Dragon Inn was a nice touch, and wandering around there at the end of the tour I was already wishing I could stay all day. 5 out of 5.

When visiting New Zealand's north island on a cruise ship you have to pick your excursions carefully to make the most of your time there. We were traveling with Lord of the Rings fans and although we hadn't watch all of the films we knew about the Shire and I talked my reluctamt husband into buying into this trip. It was possibly the best excursion we took. The whole trip was totally mind blowing. The vast size of the shire, the authenticity and attention to detail was totally mind blowing. We visited whilst docked in Taranga and although it was a bit of a coach trek to get there it was totally worth it. We lost count of the numner of "wow" moments and have so many great picures and memories which will be forever refreshed by watching the films and actually picturing ourselves there inbthe moment.

If you visit nothing else in NZ you must come here to see the 49ish Hobbit holes as the attention to detail between the small ones and large ones so you get perspective in the LOTR and Hobbit films is really amazing.

We chose the guided tour with lunch and we had a fantastic guide with plenty of knowledge but if you are not a LOTRs fan he didn’t blind you with nerdy stuff about the foiled albeit most of our group had read the books AND seen the films so we were nerdy all on our own!

The tour took about 2 hours and you are given plenty of time to take photos except in a few situations where the following group was catching up with us. There are always a few who hog the displays and delay everyone else getting a photo which was also the case in our tour but the guide made sure everyone came away with everything they needed to make their friends back home jealous!

We were then brought to the Green Dragon for a drink of your choice before entering a tent for the buffet which was excellent quality. You get about 45 minutes for this which was enough time in my opinion.

The whole thing was about 3 hours and I would recommend it to everyone whether you know anything about Hobbits or not.

OH MY GOODNESS. We were lucky enough to be in Waikato around the date Hobbiton had it's solstice evening tour, and I'm so glad we could attend. As well as a great tour of Hobbiton we were treated to roving food and entertainers around The Green Dragon. It felt like we were a part of Middle Earth! Not a cheap experience but absolutely worth it. If you get the chance and you're even slightly a fan, I would 100% recommend this.

So I'm a fan of lord of the rings and the pure fact that you see this place up close is amazing. However, I think the way they conduct the tours is very disappointing. We arrived 1 minute late for our bus and found out it's already gone so went to information booth and they kept going back and forth for about half an hour saying there are no available spots on any tours. Finally the nice lady at information founds us 3 spots on one of the later buses. once on-board the bus I couldn't believe my eyes. Half of the bus is empty. So what's all that fuss about if the buses leave half empty. Now even that is not the reason I'm disappointed. so the tour itself is supposed to be two hours. We board at 11:50 and it finishes at 13:25. During the whole tour, they keep rushing you. I mean I'm a fan, I don't want to just sprint through the whole area, have a glass of bear in 5 minutes and leave. The whole experience is rushed. plus I expected a lot more e.g. ppl dressed as hobbits going around, some live lotr music played etc. basically some entertainment instead nothing.

Hobbiton was really enjoyable. I was prepared for it to be kitchy and for the reality of the set to ruin the fantasy created by the books and films. However, the place is simply too charming (in the bewitching sense of the word) to be written off. It helped that it was a hot, cloudless day, and that all the gardens were in luxuriant bloom. Of COURSE the little Hobbit "houses" are fake, but the painstakenly crafted doors, windows, fences, steps, chimneys (some smoking), gardens, and the three-dimensional effect of the hills and valleys, with bees buzzing, butterflies fluttering, and birds calling, all combined to work their magic on the groups of visitors. We were told that they funnel about 4,000 visitors through the site in the antipodean summer. Groups left every ten minutes, and did not interfere with each other.
