I have been surprised with the amazing variety of shoreline and raptor birds that can be seen here, particularly since it is next to I-95. The preserve trails lead to areas where I have seen and photograph among others, bold eagles (presumably a pair comes to this area to fish in the sound), ospreys, and red-tail hawks. And lots of other birds including ducks, large flocks of geese, and the resident monk parakeets.
It is on the bike path, and there is a bike self-repair station, It is a nice place to come and contemplate nature while enjoying your lunch. (There are plenty of food trucks near-by)

we were staying right opposite the park across the highway..twice we went for an early morning walk.....one of the path was under repairs at that time the other path which is little muddy was open....the vies it offered were really awesome.....the rising sun with its golden rays reflecting on the sea was a sight to hold....we didnt see many people walking around.....it was beautiful but i feel that it can be missed though....shouldnt be in the must see itinerary...

This is a wonderful walk along the shore with many birds and an interesting shoreline. The only down side is the highway noise.

Come visit! (full disclosure, I am on the board of Gather New Haven, formerly the New Haven Land Trust, which owns manages the preserve, but I do not consider that nonprofit, volunteer affiliation a "business relationship" -- it is a purely civic advancement relationship!)

Long Wharf has a nature reserve which is a nice place to walk and afterwards if feeling hungry there is always a line of food trucks serving some great food (Mostly Mexican) along the waterfront from lunchtime until late evening.

Don't go out of your way to visit, but nice if you're in the area.
There are two paths, one quite solid and flat, then a way to loop along the beach.
Solid path appears to be popular to bike through.
Loop/beach walk may not be possible at high tide - appeared that we were walking below the high tide line and in areas subject to tidal flooding. Also there was a bridge that was more of a climb than a walk.

More than having great views of the Long Island Sound, the East Haven shoreline and being a Natural Preserve it has also become a food truck stop. It is a good place to enjoy a Mexican, Puerto Rican, Thai or American dish or snack.
