Description:

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America....

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

We've driven by New Haven dozens of times en route from Boston to wherever and finally had enough sense to visit this superb museum. True, the Goya etchings were an added attraction but even without this special exhibit, the museum offers an outstanding and diverse permanent collection, all well presented in a classic original building and a large (tasteless) addition.... I was wandering around the city after a Yale your when I found the museum. I highly recommend it. It was free and they loan you a quarter for the locker if you have a bag as long as you give it back. The art was spread over 4 floors, done by many famous artists, and very colorful. I love... More

We stopped in here on a whim and it was well worth it! Go around lunch time there are less people. We had the added benefit of it being spring break so there were even less. Lots of bathrooms (that's important) and free! Definitely make it to the top floors modern section! No flash allowed!

First, Louis Kahn building is a masterpiece, I believe the collection honour the building. Both, the permanent, and the temporary exhibitions are exceptional. The critique of reason, an exhibition on romanticism was very well curated, to underline Goya's etchings.

We spent an afternoon at the gallery, and were rather overwhelmed. Name an era or an artist, and there is probably at least one piece to see. The building itself is interesting, too.

Interesting and varied collection. However as a regular visitor to the main art galleries in London UK and others around Europe, I have never ever been watched by staff with the intensity experienced in this gallery! It was quite unnerving ! I am a quiet unassuming older woman and don't think I look like a potential art thief ! Very... More

I'm a Yale graduate student and had a couple of classes at the gallery. The staff attitude and general atmosphere is extremely stuffy and rude. I've also had classes with the Beineke rare book collection, directly handling some of the rarest articles in their collection, and the staff there was much more professional and welcoming. This comparison shows that just... More

The Yale Art Gallery has an extensive impressive collection. Recommend highly! Something for every art interest. Check out the Albers painting and, if you can, go to a lecture.

European, American, Asian, African paintings, sculptures. Really good collections. It is for free. Their guided tour (~1hr) are usually on Saturday, Saturday 1:30. The guides are usually art students. They open at 11:00 am on weekend. They have free storage place (you can ask for a quarter at the front desk for it.). They also hold lectures which are quite...
