Former estate of Edith Morton Chase
Oct 2021 • Solo
Nestled in the Litchfield Hills, this place remains a piece of the past. Well manicured and a great place to soak up the natural beauty.

Mis-named, nice meadows
Apr 2021
Misnamed. It has much more meadows than forest. It is a nice place for picnicking or kite flying but we naively thought that we would be able to hike in the woods. Not at this 'forest'.

Great Views

On a beautiful spring day it was lovely. Unfortunately the house is closed. The park has great hiking and great views. Well worth a visit.

Great Hike
Feb 2021
Great hike during a chilly day in feb. The trails were amazing I can only imagine how beautiful this place is during the summer and fall months.

Topsmead State Forest is Top of the Line!
Oct 2020
We are forever indebted to Miss Edith Morton Chase, the astute businesswoman who upon her death bequeathed the entirety of her estate "for the pleasure and enjoyment of the people of Connecticut."
Beauty abounds pretty much from the very start. Once you've turned off Buell Road, you're greeted by a low stone wall on either side as you make your way to the parking lot. Even in the parking lot, you can't help but notice the forest before you, the Cotswold cottage a short walk away, and the rolling fields.
Walking the open fields is an exercise in losing yourself momentarily in the freshness of it all. I was a bit disappointed by the butterfly garden, but that's because of what I imagined it to be: instead of the large, expansive set-ups that I've visited in the past, this was a small plot of beautiful flowers next to the bird blind. There were no butterflies present when I got there, but the flowers were absolutely gorgeous.
The cottage was closed during my visit; the tour hours are confined to certain days during the week. While the tour would have been nice, I didn't leave disappointed. The hike through the woods along the Edith M. Chase Ecology Trail was a highlight to me. In the mailbox at the start of the trail you'll find a pamphlet that explains what you will see and pass at over twenty-five stations during your walk. I found this to be especially informative and intriguing.
While this state park is not widely known, the people who had brought their lawn chairs and were having friendly and family chats took full advantage of all that lay around them.
Next time, I'll be one of them!

Quiet Gem in the Litchfield Hills
Oct 2020
The former summer estate and working farm of Edith Morton Chase is a peaceful retreat in the Litchfield hills. State 'forest' is misleading, as the part we walked is open fields and rolling hills with scenic vistas and a Cotswold/Tudor inspired mansion that was closed during our visit. The property is well-maintained and the garden areas around the house and the butterfly garden located two fields away still had blooming plants. Visitors enjoyed picnics on the expansive lawn around the house, walks, and kite flying but this beautiful park is a quiet, almost hidden gem. When the house tours resume next year, I will make a return visit.

Great place to run the kids and pets and fly kites.
Sep 2020
This state park apparently has been here for years but was little known as there were no signs for it until more recent times. It is a former estate with a very cool house and gardens in the middle. Normally the house is open for tours but is now limited due to Covid. HUGE fields and paths around the property on a hilltop. These large fields on a hilltop make it a great place for kite flying, something normally reserved for sea shore.

Charming cottage and great paths for walking
Jun 2019
Topsmead is a former estate now turned into a state park. At the center of the park is a charming cottage framed by colorful flowerbeds in the summer. There are also occasional tours of the cottage. There are paths for great walks through rolling meadows and woodlands.

Beautiful Park
Jun 2019 • Friends
This is a beautiful park. Lots of trails, none too long or difficult. The Chase Cottage is also very pretty. We didn't get to do the tour. Nice woodsy area and not too crowded.
