Just across Rt 1 from the community garden in Groton, there is an entrance to a small parking lot and a sign announcing the Poquonnock River Walkway, a Groton park. Completely accessible, the well-maintained boardwalk meanders along the shore of the Poquonnock River out past the airport. Approximately 1/2 mile long, Railings, brush, variety of trees, tall grasses protect shore and woodland birds. We saw swans, ducks, gulls, a Carolina Wren, and also a variety of feeder birds, which drew our attention to the fact that this "wilderness" in fact is a narrow park with the river on one side and a neighborhood (and bird feeders) on the other. Safe for children, the elderly, and those with mobility problems. Great for an afternoon walk in any season.

I've lived in Groton for 35 years and just recently stumbled upon the Poquonnock River Walkway. Amazing who something can right there and you just pass it by. I try to use the walkway as often as I can. It only takes 20 minutes for a round trip walk It is safe, level, and a beautiful walk with so much to see and just long enough when you don't think you have time.

We'd intended to hike the trails at Bluff Point State Park on a recent trip, but the cool, foggy day wasn't ideal. So we postponed the longer trail and took the Poquonnock River Walk. It wasn't exactly as I expected. The boardwalk runs immediately behind a number of homes, so you don't really feel like you're out in nature. It is a pleasant walk with some nice views along an easy to maneuver (we met an elderly woman using a walker) trail. It runs between the playground area and a small shopping area. There is a pretty gazebo at the end of the trail. Certainly not a "must see" attraction, but worth doing if you're in the area. There is no admission fee and, if traveling with children, you'll appreciate that there is a nice playground at the start of the trail.

The walkway is pleasant enough but don't expect too much. You will see some river and some reeds. Nice to fill some time but that's about it.

My family and went on this lovely walk. We enjoyed it but for me it was not as long as I anticipated which was ok for the kids. The views at the water was serene. We parked by the playground and the start of the walk was towards the right of the playground. This walk is before the Bluff Point State Park entrance. I read other reviews for directions and we did GPS the Fire Dept as was stated, it got us there. At our end was a nice gazebo that we sat in for a bit. Not sure I would go again unless I lived in the area but anything once is fun. The playground is small but aged appropriately for <5yrs old.

We were staying with family near by and they recommended the walkway. It's quite picturesque and quiet. Not too long and an easy walk for all ages and abilities. There are some nice views, however we did notice some litter and a discarded bicycle in the water. Unfortunately this is a problem in nearly every beauty spot.

This was a perfect, easy walk with the grandkids. The boardwalk goes along a water inlet for 1/2 mile and ends up at highway 1. The boardwalk is very sturdy and wide. There are benches along the way if you want to stop and take in the beauty. We could have walked on the sidewalk along highway 1 but the grandkids wanted to go back and play at the little park. I would have given this 5 stars if there hadn't been empty cups, wrappers, etc thrown over the sides. The city needs to keep on top of this. And people need to learn to throw there trash away the proper way.

If you are a visitor to the area you will not be heartbroken if you pass on this attraction. I don't see how any persons or organization ever got the funding for this project. It begins at US 1 and dead ends maybe a few thousand later at the Amtrack rail lines along the upper end of the cove between two neighborhoods. You are much better off driving past this and enjoying Bluff Point State Park which is just down the road.

This walkway starts just off Rt 1 in Groton, on the east side of the Poquonnock River. It's a boardwalk to leads to the parking lot at Bluff Point State Park. It took us about 15 minutes each way.

If you're in the area to visit Bluff Point State Park, make sure to include this as part of your trip. It's right before the entrance to Bluff Point.

This trail is a peaceful half-mile boardwalk stroll along the river, and if you are as lucky as I was, nature will be out in full force. Blue jays, swans, and rabbits highlighted my stroll along this nice river. This path is lesser known but well worth your time.
