- Lee LValhalla, New York2,153 contributionsRevolutionary War BattlefieldWhile in the area on vacation I stopped here to visit the site of a Fort that was burned by Benedict Arnold and the British in the closing days of the Revolution. I knew the museum would be closed when I came, closes on Labor Day. But you can walk around the rest of the park. You can walk thru the fort and read the signs and the memorials. Go down and look at the walls from below and see the battery's that were put in after the war to defend the town and the river. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- magill1986East Greenwich, Rhode Island184 contributionsA quiet green spaceVisited Fort Trumbull and Fort Griswold and, of the two, we preferred this one. This was an early fort that was destroyed and did not get rebuilt, unlike Fort Trumbull which was ultimately a third system fort. There is no fee for visiting this state park. So this site is a memorial where you can see the fort outlines and some elements of the original fort, climb the obelisk, check out the small museum and watch several videos about the fort and history, and visit Avery House (the home of one of the people killed in the battle moved to this location). Avery House closes at 4 (open Sat-Sun 12-4), so if you come late in the day, you might want to do this first as the obelisk and museum are open until 5. You can see the battlements and pass through the short tunnel to the outside of the fort and make your way along a trench down to the battlements, hidden from enemy fire. (Fort Trumbull was $6 with an inexact room map, a number of info panels, and a lack of overall context; a docent or audio tour would be nice; and the general feel was disinterest in spite of the nicely built visitor center; seems like a loss of opportunity for engagement.) Street Parking only.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 August 2024
- MrMurphy05Connecticut50 contributionsNice State ParkOne of the few Connecticut Revolutionary War sites. I went here with my son as we spent the day in New London looking at Coast Guard Acadamy Muesum, Fort Trumbull and the Nautilus Sub. I live not far down I-95 so it was not a big travel for me but the site is a sad piece of Revolutionary War history. It was more of a slaughter than a battle and it was American on American as I am not sure if any Brits or Hessians partook in the battle. Some historians believe it was Gen Arnold getting back at people as he grew up in the area a few miles up the River Thames in Norwich. He was a vindictive person but also screwed over but not a reason to become a traitor.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 September 2024

Historic Fort Griswold offers some incredible views of the Thames River and New London and Groton. It is reasonably a well kept battlefield. More information markers would make it lot more interesting. The Battle monument is a really nice memorial. Parking is easy. There is no charge to visit the Battlefield. Suggestion, do a little more to make people want to go there, dress it up a bit.

Fort Griswold is a must for any history buff or for anyone interested in Revolutionary America. Though there isn’t a fort in the traditional sense (that’s across the river), the earth works remain as does some unique markers and a tunnel to the lower battery. The museum and memorial are well done. There is no admission and is a great place for a stroll if history isn’t your thing.

Found this place while geocaching and stayed for an hour. Wandered inside the fort, through the tunnel and into the trenches. Up to the museum for a bit, climbed the monument... and chatted with the rangers. It was a really nice way to spend part of the afternoon, and a nice view of the harbor.

This was not a very exciting site to visit but was more of a park and was very peaceful. This would be a great place to go eat a picnic lunch after a visit to Submarine Museum

The repairs being done to the entrance have been completed. Not only a great historical site but a beautiful view of the river , Fort Trumbull and New London across the river. The museum is small but very informative. The view from the top of the monument is spectacular but there is no elevator, it is 166 steps. Call the museum or check on line for days the museum/monument is open. The fort/battlefield is always open. Admission is free.

It is my understanding that you can get information via your cell phone speaker about the history of the fort and other info once you stop into the small & interesting onsite museum prior to strolling the grounds, where they will give you the how tos info for your smartphone.

Is there any parking off Monument/Park streets? An aerial view shows NO parking off any kind. The nearest spots maybe the Bill Memorial Library or the Groton Church of the Nazarene.
