Great spot - the submarine docked outside is quite impressive and the walkthrough is fun. Just be careful going through it, easy to bang knees on metal protrusions. Also, the entrance to the museum parking lot is not very inviting, its easy to end up in the military checkpoint and have to deal with the procedure of letting them check you over before letting you back out.

We went on November 20, 2023. Unfortunately the submarine was not open for walking through. The docent told us that it is closed for repairs, which is very disappointing since it had undergone a very expensive ($36million) renovation which had been completed in 2022. We didn't see the closure information on their blog nor on the website, and we would not have made the trip if we had known.
The museum and displays that were available for touring were very well done and fine, but we had specifically gone for the opportunity to go into the submarine. We were able to walk near submarine on the outside.

Not very often do you get a chance to go onto a nuclear submarine. This was a very unique experience and I am so glad I went. The museum and submarine are both free and the exhibits are educational and informative. The staff, most active Navy personnel, are friendly and helpful.

Have been here several times before and it is always informative and enjoyable. The sub looks great after its dry-docking - I appreciate they have an exhibit on the work they did on the ship. A bit disappointed the audio guide for the sub tour was not available this time, or at least no one was offering them (it was offered in July 2019). The audio guide would have made the tour of the sub more informative. However, you can't go wrong for the price of this attraction - FREE!

The USS Nautilus offers a great self-guided walking tour of much of this historic US Navy submarine. After visiting the adjacent Submarine Force Museum, you descend down a narrow staircase (fortunately you're not required to use ladders; just a few tight bulkhead doors) into the torpedo room, control tower, bunk areas, and other living spaces. Makes you appreciate the dedication of the sailors who had to live like this for months on end.

Interesting to take a tour of an actual decommissioned sub and understand how it must have felt to live in such close confines. Definitely take your time walking through the sub. Be advised if you have bad knees you may want to reconsider. There are a lot stairs, narrow walkways, and several doorways that can be difficult to maneuver. A lot of information in the museum.

If you’re interested in military history, war history, or just submarines in general, you need to check out the Nautilus museum! It’s perfectly set up to show the history of the Navy and how the first nuclear powered submarine came to be, complete with artifacts like military medals and insignia. You learn about Admiral Rickover and the history of the Nuclear Navy, while getting to see just what life was like aboard the cramped quarters of the sub. Just a word to the wise, if you’re claustrophobic, you’ll have a rough time.

The tour of the USS Nautilus was very informative and eye-opening as to the confines onboard the submarine. Interesting how much "stuff" and how many people could be crammed into such a small space. Every square inch utilized to it's fullest. The tour was self-guided and we probably spent 45-60 minutes absorbing all we could. The USS Nautilus has a very interesting history and is definitely worth a visit.

If you're touring the southern part of New England, the USS Nautilus is worth an hour of your time. I'd pair it with a visit to Mystic Seaport, which is only about 20 minutes away.
It's still run by the US Navy and touring the submarine itself takes about 20 minutes or so. Getting around the ship requires mobility to get through the hatches and cramped spaces.
There is a museum on shore that goes through the history of submarines. It's also free.

The USS Nautilus the first nuclear submarine is at the Submarine warfare museum. It is free to enter the museum. You can walk thru the Nautilus and see what life was like onboard a submarine. Interesting to see how much stuff was crammed into such a small boat and how they lived.
