William Gillette, a noted actor of his time, built his dream house overlooking the CT river. Amazing and eccentric; and there are nice grounds for exploring. Once there was even a narrow gauge RR train on the grounds, which Gillette loved. The tracks are still there. One of the "must see" features along the CT river valley.

The Home of William Gillette, the actor who first played Sherlock Holmes. It's made to look like a castle on the outside; inside is a nice country home, with a lot of Sherlock Holmes and Gillette memorabilia. Overlooks the river; it's a very nice afternoon.

Castle and visitors center only open seasonally. We had a nice walk around, but plan on returning next spring or summer for the full experience. Nice views of the Connecticut River and the Essex Steam Train.

Go back in time to a much more gentile age. This stone castle is amazing and the grounds with lots of trails overlooking the Connecticut River far below are just as amazing. The workmanship of all the interior wood work ,doors wooden door locks and masonry was all done by true craftsmen and awe inspiring to look at.Built and designed by a... A lovely location above the Connecticut River and a perfect spot to hike on a quintessential autumn afternoon. It was after the season so the museum was closed which was unfortunate as we would have liked to have learned more about the railway Mr. Gillette built to entertain himself and his visitors. We also wished we had a map of... More

Unfortunately, the castle nor shop were open whenever we stopped by. The shop did have the restrooms open, so that was convenient. The views are quite nice even if the place is closed. We enjoyed walking around while driving through Connecticut to New York.

This castle was inspired by the actor, William Gillette, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes, many years ago. Be prepared to walk a lot and climb stairs now and again. It's worth the effort. The castle is on beautiful grounds and there are picnic tables over looking the Connectlicut River. There are also paths along the river to explore as well. Inside... More

The web said it was open till 5 but it was closed for the season. It'll be open in May! From the outside the castle stood aloft with the stones of varied sizes and shapes giving eery site. The woods were greatly preserved with autumn colors. The scenery to and from was awesome.

As quirky and cool as the castle looks from the outside, the inside is a much more impressive treat. Everything was meticulously designed and tediously hand crafted. We've only lived in Connecticut for 10 months, and we've already toured through the castle three times. Each time you see new things. We've taken family and friends to a lot of places... More

Built high on a bluff overlooking the beautiful Connecticut RIver, Gillette's Castle is the strange, interesting former home of a famous Broadway actor. The grounds are great for hiking and picnics and the sweeping views over the river below look like pictures on a postcard.
